Not too long ago we did an article which was about the Top 5 Most Sixes in an IPL season so it’s only fair that the fours get their flowers as well because seeing the batters hit lovely shots along the ground for four to different parts of the stadium is a beautiful sight to watch. We will get into all the stats below and like we did in the Most sixes article we will be excluding the current season and focus on the previous 14 seasons.
There have been a total of 23345 fours that have been hit in the 14 seasons of the IPL prior to this one which means close to 1,00,000 runs have been scored by only fours and in the 884 matches that have been played it makes it an average of 26.52 four per match meaning more than 100 runs in every IPL match are scored by fours. This is a mind boggling stat and one I am sure a lot of our readers will be happy to know about. So let's see which are the Top 5 Most Fours in an IPL season
2052 Fours in IPL 2013
This holds the record for the most fours hit in an IPL season in all the previous 14 seasons and it is ahead by a fair distance. A point to note that this was a 76 match season as compared to the 60 that most IPL seasons had. Still an average of 27 fours per match were hit in this season meaning all the batters loved hitting more fours than sixes this season. Hitting 2000 fours in 76 Matches is simply outstanding and we wonder if the current season which has 74 matches will be able to beat this record.

1913 Fours in IPL 2011
What if I told you that this took 2nd place in this list by just 2 fours from the 3rd one, surprising no? This season in 2011 had 1913 fours hit in 74 matches and this gives us an average of 25.85 fours per match and that is 100 runs every match in just Fours. The sixes catch all the attention but I am happy that from this year there is also a Fours countdown and it has its own sponsor. In 2011 hitting sixes at will was not as easy as it is today so fours were a hot commodity in those days.

1911 Fours in IPL 2012
The 3rd on this list is the 76 match season from 2012 and this just lost second place by 2 fours. This gives us an average of 25.14 fours per match that were hit in 2013 and this year the Barrera were hitting inventive fours such as sweeps, scoops etc and the fans were loving the new way of hitting fours and this was one of the heat seasons for the fours as more than 1900 were hit meaning a total of 76000+ runs in fours.

1708 Fours in IPL 2010
For the 4th spot on this list we have to go back to 2010 where hitting fours was the common thing as sixes were rare in those times. In this season an average of 28.47 fours were hit in every match which is the second best average in IPL history and it shows as in just 60 Matches more than 1700 fours were hit meaning more than 6800 runs in fours alone in just 60 Matches.

1702 Fours in IPL 2008
The last spot on this list goes to the very first season in 2008 when all the legends were playing and they all loved hitting fours as was proved by hitting 1700+ fours in only 59 Matches and this season had the best average of any other at an outstanding average of 28.85 fours per match which has yet to be beaten in any season and it will be very tough to match this average.
