Yesterday was the final day of the Laver Cup 2022 and boy what a day it was. A day full of the highest quality tennis and young players showing that they have what it takes to shine on the biggest stage in tennis. It was all to play for going into the last day of the Laver Cup as there were 3 points for every win for the day. Team Europe was leading 8-4 and what happened yesterday was the stuff of dreams and history was made. I have had a blast watching these 3 days and covering it for the website.
Before we get into the results I want to thank all the players from both teams that turned up and made sure that millions of fans got to see the heated tennis and the team atmosphere is so good to see and such a rarity in tennis. The young players showed that they have what it takes to win Grand Slam titles in the future and we saw the Big 3 play together one last time and we said goodbye to the greatest Roger Federer. Let’s have a look at the Results from Day 3.
Day 3 Results
Matteo Berrettini and Andy Murray vs Felix Auger Aliassime and Jack Sock
This was the first match of the day and Team World needed this win to stay alive in the contest and it was a match of 2 halves as in the first set of the match it was Matteo Berrettini and Andy Murray who dominated the set and won it by 6-2 and it looked like another win for Team Europe but Team World had other ideas as the pair came back strongly in the second set and they won it by 6-3 thus taking the match to a 10 point tie break. This match was evenly poised and in the tie break it was so close but in the end Felix Auger Aliassime and Jack had a little more as they won it by 10-8 to give Team World 3 important points.
Novak Djokovic vs Felix Auger Aliassime
This is one match that Team Europe had thought that they will get 3 points from but as they say never underestimate anyone and yesterday Felix Auger Aliassime was in the form of his life aa he went toe to toe with Novak Djokovic and absolutely dominated the first set and won it by 6-3 and this was a shock for Novak but he came back In the second set like he does and it went to a tie break at 6-6 but Felix had more skill in the tie break and he won the set by 7-6 and the gave Team World another 3 points to take the score to 10-8.
Stephanos Tsitsipas vs Francis Tiafoe
This was the match that would decide it all and like the first match of the day Stephanos Tsitsipas won the 1st set easily 6-1 and it was looking like Team Europe will come back but in the second set Francis of found another gear and gave Stephanos a run for his money and took the set to a tie break at 6-6 and in the tie break he won and took the set 7-6. It went to a 10 point tie break and it was a 20 minute tie break as both players gave it their all and in the end it was Francis Tiafoe who won it by 10-8 and Team World had won the Laver Cup for the first time in 5 times by 13-8. And the last match of Casper Rudd vs Taylor Fritz was not played.
I am already looking forward to the 2023 Laver Cup in Vancouver Canada and I will be here to cover it all and we will see John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg captain their teams and Roger Federer will be in Team Europe’s corner as a mentor.
