There is a rule in Pakistan cricket - whenever you feel like the drama is finally over, a brand-new circus begins!
Usually, teams rarely make this many changes mid-series, but this team is built differently. After losing the first two Tests in England, right before the third Test, Pakistan pulled off a move that will leave you shocked.
They dropped seven players from the squad and are now rushing in replacements—even though most of these players haven’t even secured their visas yet. Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Jafar, Khurram Shahzad, and Salman Ali Agha (who captained in the first Test) have all been axed. In their place, Saim Ayub, Abdullah Fazal, Arafat Minhas, Saad Baig, Muhammad Randhawa, Razaullah, and Muhammad Imran Jnr have been brought in. These replacements are also inexperienced players, making this look like a complete knee-jerk reaction.
It doesn’t stop there. They also sacked head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul. Taking their places are Mike Hesson, Pakistan’s limited-overs coach, and Ashley Noffke.
Reaction from Ramiz Raja
Even Ramiz Raja isn’t pleased with this decision. He stated that Pakistan has pressed the panic button and questioned what guarantee there is that this move will deliver results. Pointing out that the incoming players haven’t played many Tests either, Ramiz added that this decision makes Pakistan look selfish.
Pakistan hasn’t won a single match in SENA countries since 2018, which is a deeply concerning stat for the team. After heavy defeats in the last two Tests, Pakistan felt forced to make sweeping changes, but was such a drastic shake-up mid-series really necessary? I believe it was indeed a knee-jerk reaction - they should have at least waited for the series to conclude before making such massive changes, as moves like this severely damage player confidence.
