England players celebrate after thrashing Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley
England produced a ruthless all-round display to thrash Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs inside three days at Headingley and make a statement of intent in the opening Test of the series. The home side completely outplayed the visitors in all departments of the game, exploiting a pitch that favoured the bowlers and backing it up with aggressive and determined batting, leaving Pakistan completely outclassed.

England elected to bowl on a green pitch, and their decision paid dividends straight away as the match got underway. Pacer Ollie Robinson struck with the very first ball of the Test, and it set the tone for a nightmare opening day for Pakistan. Robinson, along with Josh Tongue, took advantage of the overcast conditions and precision to create endless problems for the Pakistani top order. Abdullah Shafique’s brief fightback, top-scoring with a patient 61, could not prevent Pakistan’s batting line-up from collapsing completely, tumbling from 117 for 3 to a measly 171 all out. Robinson and Tongue captured five wickets apiece in the first innings.

England’s batters hit back to seize control of the contest and push the match far out of Pakistan’s reach. Harry Brook set the tone with a fluent 91, while Jordan Cox struck a well-hit 73. Joe Root scored 66 and Dan Lawrence a quickfire 51 as England piled on the runs to a huge 409. Pakistan’s spinner Ali Usman claimed five wickets, but the host nation took a mammoth first-innings lead of 238 runs.

Pakistan's second innings, batting to try to avoid an innings defeat, was a horror show. Jofra Archer set the tone with early wickets, getting rid of the key top-order batters, before Robinson and Tongue returned to take the rest. Pakistan’s batting offered little resistance and was bowled out for 135 in only 37.3 overs before tea on Day 3. The only real challenge to the English juggernaut came from Muhammad Rizwan, who blasted along to a rapid 41, but it wasn’t enough to stop the juggernaut.

The comprehensive victory means England lead the three-match series 1-0 as they go into the second Test at Lord’s with huge confidence. Big questions remain about Pakistan’s batting application and tactical discipline ahead of the remaining fixtures after their heavy defeat.
