Shubman Gill, the new Indian Test captain, is unstoppable with the bat at the moment, as he produced another record-breaking batting performance during India’s second innings of the Birmingham Test against the hosts England. 


After scoring 269 runs in the first innings of the second Test of the five-match Test series, Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, the new Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, played another 150+ knock during India’s second innings of the match at Edgbaston in Birmingham.  


Gill dominated during India’s second innings and scored his third century in four innings as a Test captain. He scored 161 off 162 balls with the help of 13 fours and eight sixes, as the right-handed number 4 batter scored 430 runs in the entire Test match. His batting has played a huge role in India setting up a mammoth fourth innings target of 608 runs for the hosts England, who were struggling at 72/3 at the stumps of day four.

Shubman Gill slammed centuries in both innings of Birmingham Test  

  • Gill became the third Indian captain to hit centuries in both innings of a Test match. The other two Indian captains were Sunil Gavaskar (107 and 182* vs West Indies, 1978 Kolkata Test) and Virat Kohli (115 and 141 vs Australia, 2014 Adelaide Test).

  • Gill became the seventh Indian batter to record centuries in both innings of an away Test match. 

  • Gill became the ninth captain to record centuries in both innings of an away Test match. 

  • Gill became the 11th Indian batter to record centuries in both innings of a Test match.

  • Gill became the 17th captain to hit centuries in both innings of a Test match. Only the former Australian captain Ricky Ponting recorded it more than once, as he recorded it thrice as a skipper. 


Shubman Gill recorded 200 and 100 runs in Birmingham Test    

  • Gill became the second Indian cricketer to record 200 and 100 runs in the same Test match. Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was the first Indian to record it (124 and 220) during the 1971 Port of Spain Test match against the West Indies.

  • Gill became the ninth batter to record 200 and 100 runs in the same Test match. 


Shubman Gill scored 150 runs in both innings of Birmingham Test  

  • Gill became the second batter to record 150 runs in both innings of a Test match. Former Australian cricketer Allan Border was the first to achieve this record with 150* and 153 against Pakistan during the 1980 Lahore Test. 


Shubman Gill first to record 200 and 150 runs in same Test match  

  • Gill became the first cricketer to score 200 and 150 runs in the same Test match. 


Shubman Gill scored 430 runs: 2nd highest score in a Test match   

  • Gill recorded the highest score by an Indian cricketer in a Test match. The previous record was 344 by Sunil Gavaskar (124 and 220) against the West Indies during the 1971 Port of Spain Test match. 

  • Gill recorded the second-highest score by any batter in a Test match. The record is 456 runs by the English cricketer Graham Gooch (333 and 123) against India during the 1990 Lord’s Test.
