WrestleMania main events are the most important matches in professional wrestling. Every wrestler wants to be in this spot but only few can earn this place. Most of the main events have been great and the right person won the match but there are some that had the wrong wrestler win. These are spread across the 4 decades of WrestleMania. WrestleMania 42 will take place on 18th and 19th April 2026.
Let’s look at the 5 WrestleMania main events where the wrong wrestler won
WrestleMania 39 Night 2
This is the most recent and the most controversial one for the new age fans. It’s WrestleMania 39 Night 2. The payoff at WrestleMania 40 was out of this world but when this match was taking place between Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns for the WWE Championship, every WWE fan had assumed that Cody Rhodes would win the match and finish his story. However that is not what happened as Roman Reigns won the match and there was a lot of hatred for WWE at the time that they wasted the return of Cody Rhodes. Roman Reigns winning the main event was definitely the wrong decision at the time.
WrestleMania 34
The main event of WrestleMania 34 was Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns for the second time. This was the match that was destined for Roman Reigns to win. Every WWE fan was convinced that Roman Reigns would finally beat Brock Lesnar in the main event of WrestleMania. However WWE had one of the worst main events in WrestleMania history and Brock Lesnar won the match. Brock Lesnar was so pissed off that he threw the title to Vince McMahon after coming back from gorilla. Brock Lesnar winning that match was one of the worst booking decisions.
WrestleMania 33
The main event of WrestleMania 33 was Roman Reigns vs The Undertaker. This was a match that people would have wanted to see maybe 5 years ago. The Undertaker was not fit to compete as he was badly injured. His streak had been conquered by Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30 so him losing another WrestleMania Match made no sense. The Undertaker should not have had 2 losses at WrestleMania against his name. Roman Reigns was already at the top of WWE and he didn’t announce the win. The match was also very bad and The Undertaker felt awful that he could not give Roman Reigns the match he deserved.
WrestleMania 27
One of the Top 3 worst WrestleManias of all time. WrestleMania 27 was the show that everyone in WWE would want to forget. The main event of that show was John Cena vs The Miz for the WWE Championship. This was not a very good match but there had been even worse things that had happened prior. The only right outcome was for John Cena to win this match. WWE were looking to do John Cena vs The Rock at WrestleMania 28. John Cena could have won the match and held the title for a year before defending the Championship. Instead WWE did a double count out which was absolutely atrocious and The Rock handed Miz the win.
WrestleMania 9
If there is any WrestleMania that is worse than 27 it is WrestleMania 9. This was one of the worst wrestling shows of all time. The main event takes the icing on the cake. The first main event of the night was Bret Hart vs Yokozuna for the WWE Championship. This match was won by Yokozuna and in no world should Yokozuna beat Bret Hart. The fans would have accepted this if this was the only main event. However, Hulk Hogan came to the Ring and demanded a WWE Championship Match against Yokozuna and Hulk Hogan won the main event of WrestleMania in 22 seconds. This was so outrageous that the WWE fans thought of quitting watching WWE. Thankfully WWE corrected themselves at WrestleMania 10.
