Asmita Dey created history by securing India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal from the judo event after she won the women’s 48kg battle in Glasgow 2026.
Asmita Dey snatched gold medal in hard-fought final
In the final of the women’s 48kg judo event, Asmita Dey won against the Canadian Heidi Quach by yuko (2-1). Asmita struggled in the beginning by conceding a yuko and receiving a penalty, but soon equalised the scoreline (1-1). While there was no winner in the four-minute bout, the match entered the Golden Score period. The Indian athlete successfully clinched the victory in the sudden-death period to create CWG history for the nation.
Earlier, Asmita defeated Scottish Eva Ewing (100-0) and Summer Shaw (1-0) in the Quarterfinal and Semi-final, respectively.
Who is Asmita Dey?
Hailing from Belonia district in Tripura, Asmita Dey started her sporting experience on the running track, as she contested over 800m events. She even earned district-level trials call-ups for medium-distance running. However, she was later impressed with judo after being introduced to the sport.
With her impressive performances, Asmita secured a place at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Regional Centre in Bhopal in 2018. Later, she was included in the national programme and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) development group.
At the junior level, Asmita won a medal in the Asian Cadet and Junior Judo Competition 2022, while winning gold in the Junior Asia Cup and silver in the Asian Open.
Asmita’s first senior-level medal in an international event was recorded during the 2025 Casablanca African Open, where she won the gold medal.
