On Wednesday (29 July), Indian para athletes Dilip Gavit and Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath created history for India in the men’s 100m T47 event with a 1-2 finish by winning the gold and silver medals, respectively, in the Commonwealth Games 2026. Moreover, Dilip won the gold medal by setting a new Games record.

It was a rain-soaked evening, where Dilip Gavit was not in a challenging position at the 60m mark, but he made an incredible turnaround to set a new CWG record after completing the men’s 100m T47 race in just 10.71 seconds. In the meantime, his native partner Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath shined with the silver medal after reaching a mark of 10.83, which was his season-best record, just like Dilip achieved.
Basil narrowly defeated Kevin Santos from England, who won the bronze medal with his season-best record by completing the race in 10.85 seconds.
Who is Dilip Gavit?
Hailing from Tora Dongri in Maharashtra's Nashik, Dilip Gavit lost his right arm at the age of 5 years after falling from a tree. However, he was never a boy to give up, as he participated in school races and won some of those.
Vaijnath Kale has played an important role as a coach for Dilip’s incredible growth as an athlete. In the 2019 Khelo Games, Dilip was a member of the Maharashtra team that won the bronze medal in the 4x400m relay.
In the Asian Para Games 2022, Dilip won the gold medal in the men’s 400m T47 event. While he was qualified for the Paralympics 2024 in the men’s 400m T47 event, he advanced to the Final after producing his season-best performance (49.54) in the heats but failed to win a medal due to finishing in eighth position in the final (49.99)
Who is Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath?
Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath is from Veliyancode in Malappuram, Kerala, and was born without a right arm. After winning gold medals in the 2025 National Championships and the Khelo India Para Games, he had an outstanding international debut with a gold medal at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix.
