Soon after Asmita Dey’s historic Commonwealth Games gold medal in the judo event, Harsh Singh became the first Indian male to win a judo gold medal in CWG history, as he won the men’s 60kg battle at Glasgow 2026.
Harsh Singh created history after winning the final through waza-ari
On Friday (31st July), Harsh faced Australian Joshua Katz, who is an experienced judoka. Harsh claimed the win by a single waza-ari (10-0). Despite Katz having an aggressive start, the Indian had a never-give-up attitude to stun the favourite. After both failed to pin each other down, Harsh successfully executed a throw and pin to claim the waza-ari, which proved to be decisive for India’s historic gold medal.
Starting with an Elimination Round of 16 victory against Chikondi Kathiwara from Malawi (100-0), Harsh then defeated Alan Monthouel (Vanuatu) and Pedro Neto (Australia) in the Quarterfinals (102-0) and Semifinal (0-10), respectively, to qualify for the Final.
Who is Harsh Singh?
Harsh Singh now regularly represents India in international events. Since November 2025, he has participated in the Zagreb Grand Prix 2025, Hong Kong Asian Open 2025, PARK24 Group presents Tokyo Grand Slam 2025, OTP Group Tashkent Grand Slam 2026, Asian Senior Championships 2026 Individuals, Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam 2026, and Qingdao Grand Prix 2026, before appearing in the CWG 2026.
According to the latest world rankings on the International Judo Federation website, Harsh is the only second Indian among the top 100. However, the CWG 2026 gold medal was his first medal in an international event.
