Rishikanta Singh Chanambam set a new Commonwealth Games record to secure India’s first silver medal at Glasgow 2026. He secured the medal in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event on Sunday (26th July).

In the snatch round, Rishikanta Singh lifted 116 kg and 119 kg successfully before setting up a new Games record with a successful lift of 121 kg. The previous record was the successful lift of 120 kg. Malaysian Aniq Kasdan also followed the exact same path as the Indian weightlifter to end the snatch round in a tight condition.
Rishikanta started the clean & jerk round with a successful 143 kg lift but then failed to lift 148 kg and 151 kg, respectively. Meanwhile, Malaysian competitor Aniq successfully lifted 145 kg, 149 kg, and 152 kg, respectively, as the 152 kg lift set a new CWG record.
While Aniq won the gold medal with a games record total score of 273 kg (121 kg + 152 kg), Rishikanta claimed the silver medal after managing a total of 264 kg (121 kg + 143 kg). Kenyan Joshua Amunga Mboya secured the bronze medal with a total of 260 kg (115 kg + 145 kg).
Who is Rishikanta Singh Chanambam?
Hailing from Imphal West, Manipur, Rishikanta Singh Chanambam represents the Indian Army, as he is a developing talent in India’s weightlifting, which the 28-year-old has proved on his CWG debut.
Rishikanta won a bronze medal in the 2016 Junior Commonwealth Championships (56 kg event) while shining with gold medals in the 2019 Commonwealth Senior Championships (55 kg event) and 2025 Commonwealth Championships (60 kg event).
Rishikanta successfully lifted 151 kg twice in the clean & jerk round during the 2022 Asian Championships (61 kg) and the 2025 Commonwealth Championships (60 kg event), as he finished both tournaments with 271 kg lifts. In the 2025 IWF World Championships (60 kg event), he successfully lifted 152 kg in the clean & jerk round.
