During the Australia vs Netherlands match at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, while Australia broke some great records, they set a new record for the largest ODI World Cup winning margin (by runs) by claiming a 309-run victory.
Delhi hosted the Australia vs Netherlands match where Aussie captain Pat Cummins chose to bat first after winning the toss. With the help of David Warner’s classy century (104 in 93 balls), Glenn Maxwell’s fastest World Cup hundred (106 in 44 balls), and Steven Smith's (71 in 68 balls) and Marnus Labuschagne's (62 runs in 47 balls) 50+ runs, Australia scored 399/8 in 50 overs.
In chasing, the Netherlands were bundled out for just 90 runs in 21 overs. Only the opener Vikramjit Singh (25) managed to reach the 20-run mark in that innings. Among the Aussie bowlers, the leg-spinner Adam Zampa claimed a four-wicket haul (3-0-8-4), while Mitchell Marsh collected two wickets (4-0-19-2), and all other three pacers claimed a wicket each (Mitchell Starc 1/22, Josh Hazlewood 1/27, Pat Cummins 1/14).

Australia won that game by 309 runs to secure the crucial two points at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. It was the first time in Cricket World Cup history that a team won by 300+ runs (Check List 1). The previous largest victory margin (by runs) in the ODI World Cup history was Australia winning by 275 runs against Afghanistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
Meanwhile, Australia’s 309-run win also became the second-largest winning margin (by runs) in ODI history (Check List 2). The largest ODI winning margin (by runs) is India winning by 317 runs against Sri Lanka in the 2023 Thiruvananthapuram ODI.
