Kookaburra is one of the most famous sports equipment manufacturing companies from Australia famous for their sports equipment In the field of Cricket and Hockey. Kookaburra Sports was started in the year 1890 as A.G. Thompson Pty Ltd by Alfred Grace Thompson. Alfred Thompson was a migrant harness and saddle maker who then turned into manufacturing of cricket balls. In the mid-1980s, the company diversified into manufacturing the full range of cricket bats, clothing, footwear and protective equipment.

Kookaburra sports have its operations in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, South Africa and England. The turf ball which is designed and manufactured by Kookaburra sports is one of the most famous balls used in Australian, English and South African cricket from the late 1940’s.

 

How are Kookaburra balls made?

The Kookaburra Turf cricket ball is still hand-stitched in our Australian Headquarters by skilled craftsmen that have over 80 years' experience between them. Kookaburra Hockey balls were initially used in the 1956 Olympic Games, where leather balls similar in construction to a white cricket ball were used. The kookaburra Turf cricket ball has a small (slightly smaller than a golf ball cork / rubber core. Then has 5 layers of cork / string quilted. The leather is not just any old leather. Its Hand selected Australian first grade alum tanned steer hide and is tough as nails. Kookaburra balls swing a great deal in the first 20–25 overs and it is difficult for the spinners to make their grip on it.
