The first Gameweek of the 2026/27 Fantasy Premier League season has already provided plenty of surprises, and managers now have another opportunity to react to what they saw. Some teams look like excellent sources of FPL points, while others come with significant risks despite attractive fixtures.
Here are the top five FPL Gameweek 2 tips to consider before the deadline.
1. Arsenal Double/Triple-Up Against Villa Could Be Worth the Risk
Arsenal facing Aston Villa would normally be considered a difficult fixture, particularly given Unai Emery's record against his former club. However, the timing of this fixture could hardly be better for Mikel Arteta's side.
Arsenal are in excellent form, while Villa are experiencing significant instability after losing several important players during the transfer window, with Ollie Watkins also departing. That transfer disruption has seemingly affected their performances on the pitch, while their new signings will naturally need time to settle.
As a result, Arsenal are heavy favourites and could potentially win comfortably. For managers willing to take a high-risk, high-reward approach, doubling or even tripling up on Arsenal Players could be worth considering.
2. Be Careful With Chelsea and Brighton Defenders
Chelsea and Brighton both produced impressive attacking performances in Gameweek 1. Brighton defeated Aston Villa 4-0, while Chelsea beat Fulham 3-2.
That immediately makes their attacking assets interesting, but FPL managers should be much more cautious when considering their defenders.
Chelsea looked vulnerable defensively against Fulham despite their excellent attacking display, while Brighton's clean sheet came against a Villa side that was reduced to 10 men. Brighton have traditionally been an aggressive, attacking team, and Chelsea are also expected to play on the front foot.
With both sides possessing plenty of attacking quality, Gameweek 2 could develop into another high-scoring encounter. Therefore, a clean sheet looks far from guaranteed, making Chelsea and Brighton defenders risky FPL picks this week.
3. Should You Risk Manchester United Players Again After Hull Debacle?
Many FPL managers heavily invested in Manchester United during Gameweek 1 because they were facing newly promoted Hull City. Some even went for a double-up or triple-up, expecting a comfortable victory.
Instead, United suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat.
Now they face another promoted side in Ipswich, this time at Old Trafford. On paper, it is once again an attractive fixture, and the fact that it is United's first home game of the season makes the situation even more interesting.
We expect Manchester United to respond and win, but the Hull result means there is a significant amount of risk involved. United have not strengthened as heavily as some of their rivals, while their new arrivals will also need time to adapt.
Ipswich were impressive in their opening match against Sunderland, adding another reason for caution.
Our recommendation is that Bruno Fernandes is the only Manchester United player worth taking the risk on. If you are considering multiple United players, you are adopting a genuine high-risk, high-reward strategy.
4. Is Haaland Captaincy Risky After His Gameweek 1 Blank?
Erling Haaland's Gameweek 1 blank disappointed a huge number of FPL managers, particularly those who handed him the captain's armband.
However, there is very little reason to panic.
Haaland had a golden opportunity to score against Bournemouth in the first half and somehow missed it. It was the type of chance he normally converts, meaning his blank was arguably more unlucky than concerning.
Manchester City now face Crystal Palace, who were poor in their opening match against Everton, particularly defensively. Haaland only needs one goal to get going, and once he finds the net, he is capable of producing a huge haul.
He remains the best striker in the league and one of the best players in the Premier League. Haaland remains one of the best captaincy options for Gameweek 2, despite his opening blank.
Cole Palmer and Bruno Fernandes are alternative options for managers looking beyond the Norwegian.
5. Only One Liverpool Player Looks Attractive in FPL Right Now
Liverpool's draw against Newcastle exposed several concerns for FPL managers. Their midfield struggled to control the game, while Newcastle's pace repeatedly caused problems for the Liverpool defence.
The Reds also need reinforcements in midfield and defence, while their attack failed to consistently threaten Newcastle. Despite having a favourable home fixture against Nottingham Forest next, there is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding Liverpool's attacking assets.
For us, Dominik Szoboszlai is currently the standout Liverpool FPL option. He has set-piece and corner involvement alongwith penalties, thus making him an attractive option compared with the alternatives.
Liverpool can certainly produce attacking returns against Forest, but there is considerable risk attached to most of their players. If you are determined to own just one Liverpool asset in Gameweek 2, Szoboszlai would be our preferred choice.
Final FPL Gameweek 2 Tips
Arsenal's favourable matchup makes a double or triple-up tempting, while Chelsea and Brighton defenders should be approached cautiously. Manchester United remain a risky proposition despite another attractive fixture, with Bruno Fernandes the standout option.
Haaland should not be written off after one blank, particularly with Crystal Palace next, while Szoboszlai currently looks like the safest Liverpool attacking option. These decisions could make a major difference to your FPL Gameweek 2 rank.
