With two absorbing headers and then capitalizing on a tame pass from Edouard Mendy, Karim Benzema completed a rebounding hat trick to almost seal Real Madrid's place in consecutive semifinals of the Champions League. The Frenchman became only the second player to score back to back hat trick in the mega stage among the numerous record he set on the evening. The victory also ensured Real Madrid end a five-match winless streak against London clubs in Europe. With Benzema in a red hot form and his team surging forward, Madrid are eyeing their 14th trophy in the competition. Their business in La Liga is almost done after a win over Getafe at the weekend leaving them only three points from the prize. So the focus is firm on the competition they are the undisputed kings. Carlo Ancelloti's men only have to ensure their fort is guarded. Eder Militao's suspension could prove to be a factor but seasonal veteran Nacho will cope up with David Alaba well.
Kai Havertz scored before halftime to lend some hope in that loss but nothing could stop Chelsea suffering a miserable week where they lost to Brentford 4-0 also at home. In away games though, Chelsea are unbeaten in eight matches in all competitions since losing to Manchester City in January. They have won seven of them including a 6-0 drubbing of Southampton in the league this weekend. The huge win brought some relief to the Chelsea camp after a spiral week and much needed boost for the games ahead. Thomas Tuchel said the tie against Real Madrid is not alive. However, it won't prevent them to light a spark against a team that has only lost twice at home all season. This will be their first ever game at Santiago Bernabeu in a comparative clash after not playing their last season due to renovations. To progress, the Blues have to match their biggest away goal margin they did in the competition in 2008/09 season. Chelsea have to give this their best shot to carry their quest to defend their crown.

Eder Militao is suspended for the second leg after accumulating maximum yellow cards. Ferland Mendy felt some discomfort and missed the weekend win over Getafe but is expected to be back in the starting eleven. Eden Hazard, Miguel Gutierrez and Isco are the usual absentees.
Cesar Azpilicueta tested positive for Covid ahead of facing the Saints so it is unlikely he will make the trip. Romelu Lukaku carried a knock from the first leg and didn't feature at the weekend as well. He has to undergo late training sessions to know his fitness.
