SWE-W vs ENG-W Match Preview
Sweden has turned themselves into almost a dark horse for Women’s Euro 2025 after an emphatic group stage saw them win all of their games against Denmark, Poland and Germany. It was the result against the record-winners that raised eyebrows with the Blue-Yellow claiming a stunning 4-1 win despite going down inside seven minutes in the final group game. The Swede cheeseld through Die Nationaelf’s defence, which saw Stina Blackstenius, Smilla Holmberg and Fridolina Rolfö end the game before half-time, with substitute Lina Hurtig adding the cherry on the cake in the 80th minute. The fantastic performance helped them finish at the top of Group C, maintaining their 100% record of progressing to the knockout stages of each Euros. However, Sweden were destined to face a top side in the quarterfinal stage as Group D contained three favourites for the tournament, ultimately pairing them with last edition’s winners, England. Peter Gerhardsson's side is going to face what is supposedly the toughest challenge in the competition, having been thrashed 4-0 by the Lionesses in the semifinals of the last Euros and not secured a win in this fixture since 2019. The side is coming off a huge win and carrying a 15-game unbeaten run since their last defeat in April 2024 against France, so there is no reason for them not to be confident about slaying another Goliath, who is also the holder to make their place in the last four.
From facing an early group stage exit by losing 2-1 to France in their opening group game, becoming the first Euro title holders to lose their first game of the following editions, to redeeming themselves with two statement thrashings of the Netherlands and Wales, England had a dramatic group stage in the Women’s Euro 2025. They could have easily won the group as well after registering a 6-1 win in the British derby with six different scorers on the scoresheet and the Dutch winning 2-1 at half-time in their fixture against Les Bleues, but eventually lost 5-2, forcing the Lionesses to finish second. However, it helped Sarina Wiegman’s side as they avoided meeting their 2022 final opponents, Germany, who failed to win Group C and would have been a severe fixture at the first stage of the knockouts. Sweden, though, is no pushover, although England believes they are a more preferable side to face at this stage, despite the former’s positive record against top sides recently. The holders have progressed from the quarterfinal in the last three occasions and being the joint second-most scoring side in the competition with 11 goals, they are hoping to reach the semifinals for the sixth time and for the third straight time. Despite their scoring prowess, England would be facing a strong defensive unit that has conceded just twice in their past six games and played out two draws in the 2025 Women’s Euro qualifiers meetings last year.
