TOT vs ARS Match Preview
After starting 2023 with a 2-0 defeat at home to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in the Premier League, Spurs responded admirably by beating Crystal Palace 4-0 and then securing a 1-0 win over Portsmouth in the FA Cup. The latter not having Antonio Conte in the dugout as he took time to mourn the death of his former Juventus teammate Gianluca Vialli. The club’s assistant coach Cristian Stellini took charge of the match last weekend but the boss will be back for a thrilling North London derby this weekend. Spurs welcome rivals Arsenal in their backyard to prevent the league leaders from stretching their lead on top of the table and for them to enter into the top four places. Antonio Conte’s side is fifth on the table with 33 points from the first 18 games. With a win, they will overtake Newcastle on fourth and simultaneously reduce the distance with Manchester City on second to three. Once looked to have lost the understanding with his players, Conte could change the fortune with a victory over their city rivals. After all, Spurs snapped Arsenal’s chance of a top-four spot last season on this ground and the lightning could strike again. Tottenham are also unbeaten in their last eight derbies played in the Premier League at home with wins in the last three. Never before the Lilywhites have managed to win four North London derbies in a row. Hence, there is a lot of motivation to take into for Sunday’s huge clash.
With Manchester City losing their derby against Manchester United on Saturday, Arsenal have now got the chance to extend their lead on top of the table to eight points. The Gunners will face Spurs to do that carrying a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions. In the Premier League, they have not lost since September and dropped points only twice. One of them came against Newcastle United in the last league match. The 0-0 draw was only the second time Arsenal failed to find the back of the net in all competitions but turned it around with a 3-0 win over Oxford United in the FA Cup. Even without the injured Gabriel Jesus in attack, Mikel Arteta’s side have not dropped their intensity after the World Cup break and scored 10 goals in the last five games with replacement striker Eddie Nketiah scoring four of them. The 23-year-old picked up a brace in the win at the Kassam Stadium with Mohamed Elneny scoring the other one with a header. Arsenal have five wins from their last six top-flight away games, including each of their last three, with the fewest goal conceded on the road. So, the team is full of belief and their excellent season so far signals an end to the dominance of Spurs at home in the North London derby. The Gunners will also do the double against their closest rivals with a win, the first time in the Premier League since the 2013/14 season. Arsenal enters a crunching schedule with the North London derby as they face both Manchester clubs in consecutive games in the Premier League so any drop in concentration will be punished severely.
