Arsenal suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth after losing the same fixture at Emirates last season to open up the Premier League 2025/26 title race again.
The Gunners were playing a first Premier League fixture in over a month after beating Everton on 14th March 2026 at Emirates and were hoping to extend their lead at the top of the table to 12 points against Bournemouth but stumbled miserably. The Cherris took the lead through Kroupi Jr in the 17th minute when a Adrien Truffert cross deflected off William Saliba fell to him to capitalise on. Arsenal were not behind for long as after Kai Havertz missed from close range from corner, another set-piece helped them earn a spot-kick five minutes past the hour-mark. Center-back Gabriel's goal-bound strike was blocked by Ryan Christie's arm forcing Michael Oliver to point to the spot.
Havertz handed the ball to Viktor Gyokores to take it and the Swede made no mistake in converting the penalty past an outstretched Djordie Petrovic for the equaliser. However, the home side failed to add to their tally as a lack of creativity was apparent while Arsenal's potent nature from corners didn't not turn up today. Bournemouth also laid a high pressure on the Gunners and got their reward of staying in the game as their striker Evanilson played in midfielder Alex Scott to ghost past Martin Zubimendi and strike beyond David Raya in the 74th minute. Mikel Arteta's men went into desperation mode from then on and with Gyokores missing a chance to level things up in stoppage time, their faith was sealed.
Arsenal were already plagued by poor form as they suffered back-to-back Cup exits before and after the March international break. They lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City and then suffered an embarrassing FA Cup quarterfinal exit in the hands of Championship side Southampton. However, they seemed to have regained momentum with a hard fought 1-0 victory in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Sporting CP at Lisbon but they were proven wrong again. Although Arsenal maintains a nine points lead, they will have to look to City who have two games in hand and they are scheduled to face them in a potential title decider next weekend.
Unbeaten streak snapped
Before facing Bournemouth, Arsenal carried an eight game unbeaten streak in the Premier League, including winning their last five games in the competition. This was their second longest streak after going 11 games unbeaten from mid September to early December. Yet, they failed to keep it intact after suffering a loss against the Cherris. After only suffering three defeats in their first 49 matches this season in all competitions, the Gunners have now lost three of their last four. It was Mikel Arteta side's fourth loss in this Premier League campaign and the one which might have huge ramifications for the rest of the season.
Bournemouth the bogey team
Andre Iraola's side is proving to be a bogey team for Arsenal in recent outings as they also beat them in the previous face-off at the Emirates. This defeat will deal a massive title blow to the Gunners but for Bournemouth, it is another joyous visit to London. Their third win in the last four games at the venue is more than they had in the previous 14 visits showing their upturn under the manager. With this victory, Bournemouth have now gone 12 matches unbeaten in the Premier League since last losing to Gunners themselves in the reverse fixture. It also takes them ninth on the table with just four points away from the European spot.
What next for Arsenal?
Arsenal now have to regather themselves and forget this defeat as soon as possible as they have a crunching schedule ahead. The Gunners will welcome Sporting CP in the second leg of the Champions League with a 1-0 advantage from Lisbon on Wednesday night. However, they lost this game in the 2023 Europa League Round of 16 stage amid penalties. Even if they get back to winning ways and seal a berth in the semifinal in Europe's premier competition for consecutive seasons, they have a huge game to worry about next weekend as they will take on Manchester City for the Premier League decider this season.
