Declan Rice Sets Record as Arsenal Beat Sporting 1-0 in Champions League

Declan Rice and his Arsenal teammates managed to pull off a huge 0-1 victory against Sporting in the Champions League Quarter Finals first-leg. The victory was a significant one for Mikel Arteta and his players, as they recently suffered shock defeats against Manchester City and Southampton respectively that saw them lose the Carabao Cup final and crash out of the FA Cup.

It was a tight game where Arsenal put up a solid defensive performance for most of the game, and then ended up with the winning goal towards the end. This has been the case for Arsenal in most games this season, which has led to a lot of criticism, but results are only that matters for Mikel Arteta and his men. The winning goal was scored by Kai Havertz, with the assist being provided by Gabriel Martinelli. Both players were brought from the bench by the manager towards the end, and hence Arteta deserves huge credit for their victory.

Arsenal and Declan Rice went on to create history as well in the game as they now have their names in some football records.

Arsenal and Declan Rice delivered a historic night, with both the player and the club achieving notable milestones in the Champions League.

As per Opta, Rice registered an outstanding 13 tackles against Sporting Lisbon, the most by an Arsenal midfielder in a knockout-stage match in the competition. Interestingly, this figure matches the previous club record set by current manager Mikel Arteta, who also made 13 tackles against Bayern Munich back in February 2013.

Kai Havertz’s decisive goal, set up by Gabriel Martinelli, added another layer to Arsenal’s achievements. It marked the fourth time this season that a substitute has either scored or assisted a goal for the Gunners in the Champions League, the highest such total recorded by any team in a single campaign in the competition’s history.

Arsenal’s impact from the bench extends beyond Europe as well. Across all competitions this season, substitutes have contributed to an impressive 38 goals (24 scored and 14 assisted), the most by any side in Europe’s top five leagues.

What next for Arsenal?

Arsenal will face Bournemouth at home this weekend in the Premier League. This will be followed by Sporting visiting them for the second leg of the Champions League Quarter Finals, which takes place on April 15th. The Gunners are now heavy favourites to qualify for the semi-finals, as Mikel Arteta and his men look to end their season on a historic note by capturing both the Premier League and Champions League.
