Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich Champions League 2025-26

Bayern Munich secured a historic 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu in the first leg of the quarterfinal of the Champions League on 7 April 2026 through goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane despite a late goal from Kylian Mbappé threatened a comeback. They had their evergreen goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to thank for as he made several crucial saves on his milestone appearance in the competition to bail his side from the host's pressure. While the Bavarians, led by Vincent Kompany, employed an aggressive, high-pressing style, Alvaro Arbeloa's Los Blancos countered it with high-octane pacey direct football that showcased a thriller in the Madrid capital with the former just scrapping through.

Despite Real Madrid's pressure through  their two lightning forwards upfront, Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, Bayern were able to keep them at bay largely due to their 40-year-old stopper rolling back his prime years. That helped the visitors strike the opener in the 41st minute having dominated possession on the ball with Luis Diaz getting on the end of a delightful pass by Serge Gnabry after he was played in by the returning Harry Kane from injury. Madrid were stunned after looking like the most likely side to score although Bayern center-back Dayot Upamecano did fail to score in an open net early in the game. Their worry multiplied as straight after the break the Bundesliga giants scored again, capitalising on Alvaro Carreras's mistake with Michael Olise finding Kane to score.

That pushed Real Madrid to increase the intensity even more with Mbappe and Vinicius drawing more saves from Neuer and getting ever closer with their other chances. Bayern center-back pairing on the night Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah had a hard time in containing them with the host also outrunning the midfield at times with Arda Guler and Federico Valverde and later with substitute Jude Bellingham. The pressure piled up with the Frenchman finally able to get past Neuer latching onto a cross by Trent Alexander Arnold in off the upright in the 74th minute. However, Bayern kept the nerves and were able to hold on for the victory to take a 2-1 advantage back at home for the second leg next week.

The Neuer Wall: A Masterclass in Landmark appearance

For Manuel Neuer, this match was an exercise in redemption. Two years prior at this same stadium, his late fumble had allowed Real Madrid to snatch victory and progress to the final which they eventually won. Tonight, however, the veteran was a wall. It was a landmark moment for the shot-stopper who made his 136th Champions League start, equalling Barcelona's Lionel Messi's record. Only Iker Casillas have made more starts for a single club in the competition in history with 149 for Real Madrid, showing just how reliable the former Champion League winner is. His occasion was marked by the series of empathic saves he made to keep his side in the tie, pulling off an incredible nine in total frustrating Madrid's pair in attack.

Bernabeu's ghost eliminated

This win also ended Bayern's nine-match winless streak in this fixture  with the previous victory coming back in 2012. It was also the first triumph they secured in the Spanish capital from normal play, excluding their shootout victory at the venue in 2012, after years of agony at Santiago Bernabeu since the turn of the century, adding more speciality to their success. Vincent Kompany's men have also extended their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 14 matches, having not failed to find the net even once this season. It is their tenth win of the competition this season but it could have been easily different if their star striker Harry Kane did not scored the crucial second, who has now made a goal involvement in four consecutive Champions League appearances against Madrid which is the joint-longest run by a player against them in the competition
