The two-time FIFA World Cup champions Uruguay have been eliminated from the group stage in the FIFA World Cup 2026 after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Spain in their last Group H match. During the final stoppage time, Agustín Canobbio from Uruguay received a red card.
It was the must-win fixture for Uruguay to qualify for the knockout stages, who drew their first two matches of the competition. Starting the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia, Uruguay then drew against tournament debutant Cape Verde by 2-2.
Spain got a 1-0 lead against the two-time World Cup champions, when Álex Baena scored in the 42nd minute. As Cape Verde was recording a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in the other game of the same group stage that was running simultaneously, Uruguay had a strong chance to qualify for the Round of 32 with just a draw result, as they would take the second position in the group, thanks to a better goal-scoring record.
However, the CONMEBOL side failed to open their scoreline, while Agustín Canobbio received a direct red card during a desperate late stoppage time moment. Canobbio made a reckless tackle on the Spanish defender Pau Cubarsí, which resulted in a straight red card for him.
90’+5’: Agustín Canobbio (Uruguay) – Direct Red Card for Violent Contact
Due to a reckless challenge, which comes under violent contact, the Uruguayan forward received a direct red card. The situation worsened for him as he laid hands on the referee, even grabbing at his shirt.
Will Agustín Canobbio be punished more strictly?
Agustín Canobbio will obviously face at least one match suspension for receiving a direct red card. As Uruguay have been eliminated from the group stage, the forward will serve the suspension later outside the tournament. However, it was a reckless challenge, and more importantly, his behaviour with the referee post-red card was more reason that he can face stricter punishment. FIFA will announce his suspension status, whether he will face stricter punishment or not, after reviewing the entire situation.
Recently, Qatari Assim Madibo has been suspended for five games for his reckless challenge to the Canadian Ismaël Koné during their second group stage match in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
