Algeria FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

Ending their 12-year exile, Algeria are back in the World Cup stage, hoping to replicate their best finish in the competition last time. The Desert Foxes are determined to re-establish themselves among Africa's leading nations as they return to football's biggest stage with a talented squad mixed with experience and belief that they can outdo expectations. Under the management of former Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic, they have maintained excellent solidity while sustaining an attack to be trusted in. Drawn alongside reigning champions Argentina, Austria and Jordan in Group J, Algeria face a difficult but not impossible route to the knockout rounds as they arrive in North America eager to make amends for past disappointments.

Algeria FIFA World Cup History

Algeria has a proud World Cup history and remains one of Africa's most respected footballing nations. Their first appearance came at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, where they stunned the footballing world by defeating West Germany 2-1. Despite that famous victory, Algeria were controversially eliminated following the infamous "Disgrace of Gijón," a match between West Germany and Austria that effectively denied the North Africans a place in the knockout rounds.

Algeria returned to the World Cup in 1986 and then appeared twice in the 21st century, in 2010 and 2014. Their finest campaign came in Brazil when they reached the Round of 16 for the first time in their history. The Desert Foxes pushed eventual champions Germany to extra time before narrowly losing 2-1 in one of the most courageous performances by an African side in recent World Cup history. After a two-edition absence, Algeria are back on the World Cup stage, hoping to prove their point again.

Algeria Qualification and Preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Algeria cruised past their qualification campaign with ease to book their fifth appearance at the World Cup stage. They topped their group, collecting 25 points from 10 games, registering eight wins and suffering just one loss. The side scored 24 goals, led by Mohamed Amoura, who returned as the highest goalscorer in this CAF qualifier with 10, while also providing four assists. As a result, Algeria were the second-most scoring team in the qualifying, only failing to score in the goalless draw against Guinea in September 2025 while steering clear of second-placed Uganda by seven points. They maintained terrific form leading up to the tournament, aside from a quarterfinal elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations, which was their only defeat in the tournament, by staying unbeaten in the preparation friendlies. It included that huge away win over the Netherlands, where Hadj Moussa came off the bench to score a spectacular winner in the 1-0 victory in his own stomping ground in De Kuip. Aside from the 2-0 loss to Nigeria, Algeria have yet to be beaten since June 2025, scoring 53 goals and keeping remarkably 14 clean sheets, including in their last four games leading up to the World Cup. Here’s the Algeria FIFA World Cup Records and Stats

Strengths of Algeria Football Team

Algeria has a lot of players in the squad who are capable of making the difference on the big stage. They have a solid goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, son of France’s legend Zinedine Zidane, who can single-handedly decide games with his shot-stopping abilities. There is, of course, talisman and veteran winger Riyad Mahrez, who will again be key to stirring the attack for the side in a major competition, being the second-most goalscorer for his nation with 38 goals in 94 appearances. He also produced four assists in the qualifiers and brings tournament experience, having featured last time Algeria played in a World Cup back in 2014. The other player in this roster who was part of the group in Brazil is Nabil Bentaleb, who is a key player in midfield, which is blessed with quality and depth. They have an excellent creator in former Lyon star Houssem Aouar, while they can call on youngsters like Leverkusen’s Ibrahim Maza, Nice’s Hicham Boudaoui, Frankfurt’s Farès Chaïbi and the much talked Anis Hadj Moussa of Feyenoord, who bring the spark and score the decisive goals, as proven in the recent friendlies, from the bench to change the complexity of games with their energy and dynamism. However, the most important part is Algeria’s immense solidity, which they have grown under Vladimir Petkovic and will use to frustrate the big guns in the tournament.

Weaknesses of Algeria Football Team

While the squad has a fantastic blend of experience and youth, which is also one of their key strengths, with youngsters showing the maturity of taking bigger responsibilities, Petkovic has been criticised for relying heavily on the old guard still. The future stars of the team are mostly restricted to impact substitutes. While it could be viewed as positive to have more experienced heads on the pitch, especially when the tournament name is the World Cup, with getting benched only serving as motivation for the underage to keep proving themselves off the bench to start for the team eventually, aside from the obvious tactics of using the to wear down opponents late in the game after soaking pressure through their solidity, it also devoids the side of the youthful energy, freshness, makes them predictable at times and obstruct new ideas. As a case, the team also at times becomes too dependent on those old stars to fire and if they are neutralised, for example, Mahrez, then they stagnate and fail to create clear-cut opportunities.

Key Player: Luca Zidane

Carrying a famous surname and immense responsibility, being a descendant of a tournament great, Luca Zidane, enters his first World Cup 2026 with a lot of belief. Not lurking in his father’s shadow and forging his own path, he has established himself as Algeria's first-choice goalkeeper and also one of the most important figures within the national team. His shot-stopping ability, composure under pressure and experience in European football provide Algeria with a dependable presence between the posts. In a group featuring attacking talent from Argentina and Austria, Zidane's performances could prove decisive. Goalkeepers often become the heroes of major tournaments, and Algeria will hope their number one can deliver crucial saves when they matter most. Even if Mahrez or Moussa grabs headlines for scoring the most important goals, the 28-year-old will be tasked that the team’s hard work of getting those strikes doesn’t go in vain. If the Desert Foxes are to reach the knockout stages, Luca Zidane may have a larger role to play than any other player in the squad.

Manager: Vladimir Petkovic

Vladimir Petković arrived with the task of restoring Algeria's consistency after a period of mixed results following their 2019 AFCON triumph. The experienced Bosnian coach brought a wealth of international experience, having previously guided Switzerland to multiple major tournaments. Since taking charge, Petković has focused on building a balanced side capable of competing against both African and international opposition. His tactical approach emphasises organisation, disciplined defending and quick attacking transitions. Under his guidance, Algeria have gradually developed into a more cohesive unit while retaining the attacking flair that has traditionally characterised the national team. The FIFA World Cup 2026 represents the biggest test of Petković's tenure and an opportunity to lead Algeria back into the spotlight.

Algeria FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

Algeria possess enough quality to compete for a place in the knockout, but their margin for error is slim, even though the eight best third-placed teams are also advancing to the Round of 32.

Argentina are expected to dominate Group J, leaving Algeria and Austria as the leading contenders for second place. The head-to-head meeting between those two sides, which will also be a revenge-seeking one following the controversy in their debut campaign, could ultimately decide who finishes there, as Jordan will be the fixture both will eye to take maximum points. However, finishing third might also help them escape the group stages for just the second time in their short World Cup history, which seems to be success for them, as either way, they will face strong opposition in the next round. The Desert Foxes have the attacking talent to trouble opponents and the experience to handle pressure situations. However, defensive discipline and consistency will be crucial if they are to fulfil their potential.
