We are here with the latest Chelsea transfer news for you, as Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea have begun direct talks with French club Rennes for their promising youngster Jeremy Jacquet. The young French defender is reported to be Chelsea's top choice in a 3-man defender shortlist that also includes Como star Jacobo Ramon and Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi. Interestingly, Italian side Como is also currently managed by Cesc Fabregas, who previously played for Chelsea. 2 major reasons for the transfer move are said to be Chelsea wanting to support new manager Liam Rosenior due to the Blues being short in defense and also them wanting to avoid them increased competition in the Summer Transfer Window.

Jeremy Jacquet contract situation and expected transfer fee

Jeremy Jacquet had renewed his contract with Rennes till 2029, which puts the French club in a strong position during negotiations. Chelsea are believed to be willing to pay over €50 million, but Rennes are reportedly holding out for more than €60M. As for the player, Jacquet is interested in joining Chelsea and playing in the Premier League.

Jeremy Jacquet - The Chelsea target's career so far

Jacquet was born in Bondy, a suburb in northeastern Paris, and comes from a family of Guadeloupean heritage. He made his professional breakthrough with Rennes on 13 January 2024, appearing as a late substitute in a 2–0 win over Nice. Soon after, he moved on loan to Clermont Foot for the remainder of the season to gain more first-team experience. The loan was later extended into the 2024–25 campaign following Clermont’s drop to Ligue 2. In February 2025, Rennes decided to bring him back early, reportedly paying €900,000 to terminate the deal. A few months later, on 26 May 2025, the club showed further faith in him by extending his contract until 2029.

On the international stage, Jacquet has represented France across several youth age groups. His standout performances at the 2024 UEFA European Under-19 Championship earned him a place in the Team of the Tournament, even though France finished as runners-up to Spain in the final.

Will Jeremy Jacquet join Chelsea?

Todd Boehly's Chelsea are excellent when it comes to transfer negotiations, and we see them getting a deal done for Jacquet with Rennes. Expensive January transfers aren't easy, but Chelsea have done it before with Enzo Fernandez from Benfica and this should be another one.

As for Jeremy Jacquet, joining Chelsea would mean faster development for the player as the Blues are currently short in defense and he should be getting some first team opportunities considering his talent. Even if does end up staying at Rennes, we are still expecting him to grow into a superstar at a club that has developed the likes of current superstars Eduardo Camavinga, Ousmane Dembele, and Raphinha.
