England vs Argentina FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Preview

England reached the semifinal stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2018 after a 2-1 comeback win over the tournament’s dark horses, Norway, in the quarterfinal tie that had drama and controversy alike. Thomas Tuchel’s men fell behind in the 36th minute when Andreas Schjelderup’s shot-cum-cross found the back of the net to the fury of the side, who believed Harry Kane had been fouled in the build-up. The Three Lions didn’t make Brazil, responding just before half-time and it was Jude Bellingham again, carrying his aura from the famous night at Azteca,  that scored the equaliser. However, it was a controversial one as well, with the strike directly coming from Oscar Nyland’s goal-kick, which seemed to have taken a diversion after clipping the spidercam cable. FIFA clarified later that the sensor in the ball did not give any evidence of it, so the goal was allowed to stand. Norway was frustrated again when their equaliser from a corner in the second half was overruled by VAR after Erling Haaland pushed on Elliot Anderson. England eventually got the winner in extra time, with the Real Madrid star again popping up with a brace to eliminate the sensational Vikings and leave them just one game away from the final. They also had a late penalty overturned, but they are now destined to face an old foe from South America, who are also the holders. Despite progressing, Tuchel and Bellingham had contrasting views of the performance, which England fans hope doesn’t cause a new rift between the two, knowing that they are so close to reaching the final for the first time since their only World Cup triumph 60 years ago at Wembley. Moreover, Argentina has caused a lot of heartbreak in the knockout stages, like Maradona’s fury in 1986 or shootout heartbreak in 1998, although they edge ahead in head-to-head record in the tournament. England also defeated Argentina on the way to their 1966 glory and they hope they take another positive outcome here to solidify the path even more for football to come home. Here’s England FIFA World Cup Knockout Record

Escaping the scares of Cape Verde and Egypt, Argentina had to dodge another one as they claimed a 3-1 win over Switzerland to make their place in consecutive semifinals of the World Cup and the sixth in their history with a third appearance in four editions. La Albiceleste also extended their record unbeaten streak in the competition to 12 matches since losing to Saudi Arabia in their opener in 2022 and is just one step away from entering back-to-back World Cup finals for only the second time in history. It seemed that Lionel Scaloni’s men had finally overcome their miseries when Alexis Mac Allister headed in from Lionel Messi’s eighth-minute corner, helping the talisman reach a milestone of assists in the competition. However, Argentina went back into a shell instead of doubling the advantage, allowing Switzerland to get back into the game, finding the equaliser through Dan Ndoye, with the momentum entirely on their side. But then came the turning point as Breel Embolo received a second yellow card for a blatant dive after a VAR review, leaving the side with 10 men for the rest of the game. Argentina seized the opportunity, with Julian Alvarez scoring one of the goals of the tournament before Lautaro Martinez confirmed their place in the final four. Despite facing adversity, this team, even with defensive fragilities, has refused to bow down easily and with the ‘GOAT’ deciding each game for them, is not stopping them from dreaming of retaining the silverware they so gloriously lifted in Qatar. However, they face their old rivals in the competition after 24 years, as the obstacle separating them from reaching the final and can channelise Bobby Charlton or Michael Owen moments with Bellingham. Their record of progressing from each semifinal appearance at the World Cup could be at stake, but their victory to end up in this position was their 13th straight since September last year and with Scaloni looking to be only the second coach from his nation to manage two World Cup finals, there is enough indication to show La Albiceleste won’t let this go easily. England vs Argentina FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Prediction

This semifinal is expected to be a tense and tetchy affair, as this rivalry has often shown, with both sides having defensive struggles. The pair also have one of their nation’s best to count on, with Messi and Harry Kane both locked in the Golden Boot race, the latter getting a mileage after Kylian Mbappe and France went packing in the other semifinal, while the Three Lions have the additional factor of Bellingham.  It is unlikely to be a one-sided affair like Spain’s dominant triumph and penalties might be required. However, we are betting on the game to be decided in 120 minutes if not earlier, with Argentina’s more experienced squad in such a situation and the Messi factor silencing the noise around their opposition to mark the date with La Roja in the final.
