France vs Sweden FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Preview

France joins Argentina and Mexico as the only sides to end up as group winners with a perfect record by winning all their games at the stage, underlining their status as one of the favourites for the World Cup. This is the first clean sweep they managed since hosting the 1998 World Cup. Even though Didier Deschamps' side started slowly in the first half against Senegal in their opening group game, they ultimately registered a commanding 3-1 victory over the African side before comfortably dispatching Iraq 3-0 to secure qualification with a game to spare. They carry forward their streak of winning big after they pulled off a 4-1 triumph against an Erling Haaland-less Norway in a dominating group stage. Ending as Golden Boot winner last time, Kylian Mbappé once again spearheaded the French attack, finishing the group stage among the tournament's leading scorers with four goals while Ousmane Dembele locked himself in the race with his hat-trick in the final group game, equaling the tally of his former PSG teammate. France was one of the highest scorers in the competition, with 10 goals and entered the knockout stage for the 11th time, with Sweden to face in the new Round of 32 stage. There are some question marks on the defence as it has failed to keep a clean sheet in seven of the last eight games, but there seems to be no side that can put that scary attack at bay. While Germany and the Netherlands have exited early from this stage, through tie-breakers, it is unlikely this star-studded French team will accept the same fate, having not lost a single knockout game in the last two editions in 120 minutes, although they too lost on penalties to Argentina in the 2022 final. Here’s France FIFA World Cup All Time Stats and Records

Despite suffering a heavy defeat to the Netherlands in the second group game, Sweden managed to qualify for the Round of 32 stage as one of the best third-placed teams. They marked their return to the World Cup, missing out on the last finals in Qatar, with a flyer after registering a 5-1 victory against Tunisia, their second biggest showing their attacking prowess. Then they got the taste of their own medicine, which exposed their defensive fragilities against the Dutch, becoming the first side to both win and lose by the same 5-1 margin in back-to-back World Cup games. However, Graham Potter's side managed to escape the group stage after coming from behind to draw 1-1 against Japan to collect four points and qualify for their ninth knockouts in the competition's history. Anthony Elanga’s screaming equaliser in the last game saved them from another defeat that would have eliminated them from the competition and they were unlucky not to get more, as Blue Samurai’s number one Zion Suzuki did not let the scoreline change further. However, even if they avoided Brazil, they are going to face a ruthless France in the Round of 32 stage, knowing a fifth loss in six games against Les Bleus will send them packing. It would be their earliest elimination since their group stage exit in 1990. Having returned to the stage, despite finishing bottom of their qualification group, after getting a second chance through the playoffs courtesy of their Nations League standings, they will do everything to make another stunning story at this stage. France vs Sweden FIFA World Cup 2026 Team News

Despite playing through a back injury, France’s defender William Saliba will return to partner Dayot Upamecano at centre-back after resting against Norway, as will midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who will regain his place in the midfield pivot alongside Aurelien Tchouameni. The rest of the team should remain the same, with ṭhe front four intact, including Ousmane Dembele, who has now matched Kylian Mbappe’s tally of four goals this tournament with his spectacular hat-trick in the final group game and entered the Golden Boot race.

Centre-back Isak Hien was subbed off with an injury in the final group game for Sweden, forcing Victor Lindelof to move back into the defence after starting in midfield, with replacement Lucas Bergvall filling in the middle of the park instead. With Atalanta defenders' continued absence, we are likely to see Lindelof return to his original role while the Tottenham Hotspur player earns his first start in the tournament. The rest of the team remains unchanged, with Zetterström continuing in goal in place of Kristoffer Nordfeldt as Graham Potter looks to stick with the 3-4-3 formation deployed against Japan.

France vs Sweden FIFA World Cup 2026 Predicted Lineups

France (4-3-3): Maignan; Koundé, Upamecano, Saliba, Hernández; Tchouaméni, Rabiot; Olise, Dembélé, Doué; Mbappé

Sweden (3-4-3): Zetterstrom; Lagerbielke, Lindelof, Gudmundsson; Bernhardsson, Bergvall, Ayari, Stroud; Elanga, Gyokeres, Isak

France vs Sweden FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Prediction

Sweden’s leaky defence is their most worrying aspect and it will let them down again against this exuberant attack of France, who would traumatise any backline on their day. Potter’s side has some firepower themselves with the striker combo of Viktor Gyokores and Alexander Isak that might squeak a goal against a not-so-sturdy opposition defence, but it won’t be enough to stop this rampaging tournament favourite.
