Haiti FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

Ravaged with internal conflicts and unable to play in their home for half a decade, Haiti produced the most sensational story by qualifying for the World Cup stage for the first time in 52 years. It was an incredible sporting moment for the nation that has faced so much violence and political instability in the last few years and is still reeling from the catastrophic earthquake that struck the nation in 2010, killing close to 316,000 people. Football is their only shining light and a moment of escape and the spirited Haitian squad want to provide that to the nation in the grandest stage of all. They will head against Scotland, Morocco and Brazil in their group in a crunching group but they will take inspiration from their last World Cup appearance where they produced some stunning moments despite being put in a similar 'Group of Death'.

Haiti FIFA World Cup History

The only other appearance Haiti made at the World Cup was back in the 1974 edition hosted in West Germany. Like in the present edition, they were placed in a 'Group of Death' alongside Italy, Poland and Argentina. Being a massive underdog in the competition and placed in a brutal group, the Caribbean nation did not have it easy as it was expected as they finished bottom, losing all three matches, scoring two goals and conceding 14. Despite their massive struggle, the team's tournament debut is famously remembered for delivering their most iconic moment in the competition history while also showing the unfortunate political chaos that plagues the nation. They faced 1970 World Cup runners-up Italy in their debut game at the competition and was widely expected to be a massive blowout. Led by legendary goalkeeper Dino Zoff, Italy had gone 1,142 international minutes, over 12 full games, without conceding a single goal.

However, that record was quashed in the game least expected to. Haiti managed to hold off the Azzurri onslaught in the first half mainly due to the heroic performance of goalkeeper Henri Françillon. Their resistance allowed them to create their greatest moment in short history at the competition. Just one minute into the second half, midfielder Philippe Vorbe delivered a brilliant through ball. Star forward Emmanuel Sanon outpaced the Italian defence, rounded off, and slotted the ball into an empty net to give Haiti a shocking 1–0 lead. While Italy eventually rallied to win 3–1, Sanon's goal shattered Zoff’s world-record clean-sheet streak and instantly became a permanent piece of World Cup folklore.

Their World Cup campaign then took a very dark turn before their second match against Poland. Defender Ernst Jean-Joseph failed a drug test for a banned stimulant, marking the first official doping case in World Cup history. Terrified by the severe political climate back home under the dictatorship of Jean-Claude 'Baby Doc' Duvalier, the players suffered a psychological blow worrying about Jean-Joseph's fate. Distracted and emotionally rattled, the team fell apart and was trounced 7–0 by the opposition. After receiving assurances that Jean-Joseph was still alive, a stabilized Haitian team played with renewed pride in their final match against Argentina. Though they lost 4–1, Emmanuel Sanon proved his class yet again by firing a thunderous strike past Argentine keeper Daniel Carnevali

Haiti Qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Haiti became the first Caribbean nation to qualify for multiple World Cup against all odds in a stunning qualifying campaign. Not able to play at home since 2021 due to severe political instability and gang violence that gripped the nation following the assassination of the country's President Jovenel Moïse with their home stadium also taken over by armed gangs three years ago, the side managed to achieve the feat playing on borrowed grounds for five years. It is an incredible achievement knowing that the team's manager Sébastien Migné has never actually set foot in the country since taking the job due to the security situation. They played the CONCACAF qualifiers in Curacao and it was a performance full of hearts. Read more on How Haiti Qualified in 2026 FIFA World Cup

Migné's team used their situation as motivation to top their qualifying group ahead of favourites like Honduras and even World Cup regulars Costa Rica to book their place in the tournament hosted in North America in magnificent fashion. After dominating the second round, losing only to fellow qualified team Curacao, they had a shaky start in the final round with back-to-back draws in the first two games. Despite winning against bottom placed Nicaragua, the 3-0 loss to Honduras seemed to have ended their chance. However, a fantastic turnaround in the final month of the qualification in November last year where they secured a 1-0 win over Costa Rica and a 2-0 triumph over Nicaragua in the final group game coinciding with Honduras playing out a goalless draw against Costa Rica sealed their place in the finals.

Haiti has been attracting players from their diaspora in the top five leagues to strengthen up the squad ahead of the World Cup. Auxerre's Josué Casimir and Wilson Isidor of Sunderland have answered their call to get chosen in the roster after making their debut for the nation in the friendlies two months back. The latter scored his first international goal in the 1-1 draw against Iceland in one of the friendly games in March. The team already have top European league experience in the squad, who contributed immensely to their historic qualification, like Wolves midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde. The average age of the squad is 27.5 years of age with Captain and veteran goalkeeper Johny Placide the senior most figure at 38 years of age.

Strengths of Haiti Football Team

The greatest strength of Haiti is their grit and determination motivated by their qualification journey despite not playing at their home because of the civil war with their notion of proving something on the world stage. This physiological factor openly helps smaller teams to punch above their weights and the Grenadiers are no different hell bent to carry forward their fairytale in the ultimate stage. They could be helped by the hungry players desperate to shine on the big stage especially with their promising frontline containing experienced forward Duckens Nazon, Lenny Joseph and they have now added Isidor to it. The dynamic fast-paced attack will look to score at least one goal at the tournament which will be etched forever in the memories of the Haitians and give hope to a nation in conflict.

Weaknesses of Haiti Football Team

The severe lack of experience of playing at this level and the lack of matching qualities will hurt the team for more than anything else. Secondly, they have been put in an unforgiving group containing Scotland, declared AFCON winners Morocco and five time world champions Brazil. It will be hard to garner even a point against those oppositions. Their slow defence with the main center-back Ricardo Adé being aged 35 despite experience is a big concern as teams would open them up with pacey forwards while it is a lot to trust on the reflexes of their 38 year old shot stopper. The lack of a strong support from the home crowd at the tournament because of stringent travel restrictions and immigration policies is also a big drawback considering the importance of 12th man for a side like them.

Key player: Duckens Nazon

Even though Haiti has upgraded their frontline massively with the introduction of Isidor with in form players like Lenny Joseph part of the roster, they still look at their legendary striker Duckens Nazon for inspiration at the World Cup stage. Nation's all time record goalscorer by bagging 44 goals in 76 appearances, the 32-year-old veteran also ended top at the scoring list with four goals in the historical qualifiers. Not only that, he averaged the most shots per game for the team and had the second best dribble success rate. Nazon's prolific nature, experienced head and leadership is vital for the side that no new face could fulfill. Against some of the elite opponents in their group in the biggest stage of all, his individual class will be required to create encouraging moments for Haiti.

How will Haiti Lineup at the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Haiti has been flexible with their system and formation, often organising teams according to the type of opposition they face. So, there won't be one fixed way they will go with in the World Cup or even a confirmed lineup. However, the 4-2-3-1 set up is more ideal for their fearlessness attitude which could change into a more compact shape. Despite his age, captain Johny Placide will be in goal as number one because his experience will be important more than anything else and he will be protected by the backline containing the ever present Ricardo Adé partnering the former Burnley defender, Hannes Delcroix, at the center-back role. The fullbacks are of great importance to the team with Carlens Arcus on the right and Duke Lacroix on the left excelling both attacking and defensive wise.

Midfield is an area of contention with a good depth in the area with quality. Danley Jean Jacques, who provided five goals contributions with two goals and five assists in the qualifiers and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, one of the top draw players for Wolves in a season they suffered relegation, seemed to be the ideal choice while Léverton Pierre could step in for a more stable approach. Sunderland's Isidor is set to get his competitive debut at the World Cup while Joseph, fresh from a season in which he scored 16 goals and provided 10 assists across all competitions with Ferencvaros, adds another dimension to an already formidable attacking line-up. Josué Casimir and Don Deedson Louicius are also good options to have but Ruben Providence could make the cut because of better showing in the qualifiers. Up front, Duckens Nazon is the undisputed starter.

Their final group game also comes against a top side in African giants Morocco on 25 June 2026 in Atlanta.

Haiti FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

The sensational World Cup qualification given their situation in their homeland, has already given so much to Haiti and they will play the tournament with their fearlessness mentality, devoid of any expectations on their shoulders. Sébastien Migné's team will play with a lot of pride and won't be shy of giving one or two troubling moments to the big giants. That won't be enough as the quality difference is too big for them to try and stick themselves into the top three of their group for a chance to move into the knockouts. However, Les Bicolores will treat the competition as a festival and a platform to offer some happy moments to the people of their nation to get some satisfaction amid the conflicts.
