Iraq FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

For the first time in four decades, Iraq will grace football's biggest stage. Team Lions of Mesopotamia arrive at the FIFA World Cup 2026 carrying the hopes of an entire nation after securing a historic return to the tournament, ending a 40-year absence that stretches back to their only previous appearance in 1986. Their qualification represents one of the most significant achievements in modern Iraqi football and even more so when they battled through the political instability of the Middle East conflict to get here. It serves as a testament to the resilience the national team has displayed through years of challenges both on and off the pitch.  Drawn alongside France, Senegal and Norway in Group I, Iraq face one of the toughest groups in the tournament, but they will arrive in North America determined to prove they belong among the world's elite and perhaps spring a surprise or two along the way in another opportunity to write history.

Iraq FIFA World Cup History

Iraq's World Cup history is brief but deeply significant. Their sole previous appearance came at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Although Iraq lost all three group-stage matches against Paraguay, Belgium and hosts Mexico, qualification itself was a landmark achievement and remains one of the proudest moments in the country's football history. In the decades that followed, Iraq often came close to returning to the global stage but repeatedly fell short during qualification campaigns. Despite those disappointments, the nation continued to produce talented players and memorable achievements, most notably winning the 2007 AFC Asian Cup in one of the greatest stories in international football. However, a World Cup return remained elusive until the road to 2026 finally brought long-awaited success.

Iraq Qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Iraq becomes the ninth participant from Asia in the 2026 World Cup after a thrilling qualifying campaign that was also embroiled in political tension. The Lions of Mesopotamia competed against Oman, Kuwait, Palestine, South Korea, and Jordan in their third round qualifying group. After recording three wins, three draws, and three losses, Graham Arnold’s side had to settle for the third spot in the table after missing out on the automatic spot by a point to Jordan, despite defeating them on the final day of the qualifiers. That allowed them to enter the fourth round. However, they still failed to advance automatically despite remaining unbeaten at this stage, with a 1-0 win against Indonesia and a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia. So, they were left to battle with the UAE for a place in the inter-confederation playoffs, which they duly performed with a dramatic stoppage-time winner from the spot to seal a thrilling 3-2 comeback aggregate victory. However, their preparations for the inter-confederation playoffs game against Bolivia in Mexico were heavily disrupted by the airspace ban caused by the USA-Iran conflict in February 2026 and visa problems. They had to travel via land to Jordan and used a FIFA chartered private jet to get to Mexico, ultimately after getting emergency visas. Still, Arnold’s side managed to keep a fantastic mindset and performed admirably to defeat Bolivia 2-1 and finally secure their place in just the second World Cup in their history.

Strengths of Iraq Football Team

Iraq's greatest strength is their collective spirit. Unlike many teams that rely heavily on individual stars, Iraq operates as a cohesive unit willing to fight for every ball and support one another throughout matches. This mentality has been central to their success in recent years. The squad also possesses a strong defensive organisation. Iraq is difficult to break down when operating in a compact shape and has repeatedly frustrated technically superior opponents. No greater example than holding European champions Spain in a 1-1 draw in the preparation friendly in June, just a week before the tournament. Another advantage is the lack of pressure. With expectations relatively modest compared to their group rivals, Iraq can approach matches with freedom and confidence.

Weaknesses of Iraq Football Team

The biggest challenge facing Iraq is the quality of opposition they will encounter. Group I contains France, one of the tournament favourites, as well as Senegal and Norway, both of whom possess significantly greater depth and experience. Iraq will enter every group-stage fixture as underdogs. The squad also lacks players regularly competing at the highest levels of European football. While there is talent throughout the team, the difference in individual quality could become evident against elite opponents. Goal-scoring consistency may also be an issue. Iraq often rely heavily on Aymen Hussein for attacking inspiration, and creating chances against top-level defences could prove difficult.

Key Player: Aymen Hussein

Aymen Hussein has embroiled Iraq’s success to make it to the biggest stage of all. The prolific striker has established himself as the focal point of the national team's attack and has consistently delivered goals in crucial matches. His physical presence, aerial ability and finishing make him Iraq's primary attacking weapon. He was the top scorer in Asian qualifying with eight goals, while scoring the roof-breaking winner against Bolivia in ṭhe inter-confederation playoffs, which sealed his side’s spot in North America. Beyond his goalscoring contributions, Hussein provides leadership and experience for a squad that will be competing on the World Cup stage for the first time in decades. If Iraq are to produce any surprises in Group I, their leading striker will almost certainly be at the centre of those efforts.

Manager: Graham Arnold

The appointment of Graham Arnold marked an important step in Iraq's ambitions to establish themselves among Asia's leading football nations. The experienced Australian coach brought significant international experience following his successful tenure with Australia, where he guided the Socceroos to the knockout stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, narrowly losing to eventual winners Argentina in the Round of 16. His pragmatic approach, organisational skills and tournament experience have been valuable assets for Iraq as they prepare for their first World Cup appearance in forty years.  Arnold has focused on building a disciplined and hardworking team capable of competing against stronger opponents. While Iraq may not possess the individual quality of many rivals, their structure and collective spirit have improved significantly under his leadership. The World Cup represents the biggest challenge of Arnold's tenure, but it is also an opportunity to further enhance his reputation by guiding one of Asia's most passionate footballing nations on the global stage.

Iraq FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

Simply reaching the FIFA World Cup 2026 represents a significant achievement for Iraq. The challenge now is turning that success into a competitive tournament performance. Unfortunately for Team Lions of Mesopotamia, they have been drawn into one of the most demanding groups in the competition. France are overwhelming favourites to top Group I, while Senegal and Norway possess the quality and experience to challenge for the second qualification spot. Iraq will therefore need to produce performances beyond expectations to progress. That said, tournament football often produces surprises with Arnold’s men desperate to prove that the 1-1 draw against Spain was not a fluke. Iraq's organisation, fighting spirit and lack of pressure could allow them to frustrate opponents and potentially claim a memorable result. Regardless of the outcome, Iraq's return to the World Cup marks a historic moment for the nation and they will enjoy every moment of their stay.
