Ivory Coast FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

Returning to the World Cup stage after a gap of 12 years, the Ivory Coast hopes to achieve what even the golden generation could not, i.e., to progress to the knockout stages of the competition. The Elephants will face a challenging group in the 2026 edition, hosted in North America, facing Germany, Ecuador and Curacao, but the talent is in store to make the side ambitious to reach unprecedented heights. Not considering the failures of their AFCON defence, the Ivory Coast wants to be a different outfit on the global stage this summer.

Ivory Coast FIFA World Cup History

Before 2026, the Ivory Coast only made three appearances at the World Cup from 2006 to 2014, having only turned into a steady African giant this century. In all of their participation, the Elephants were grouped, failing to progress to the knockout stages, even though they managed to win games at the tournament and dominated the African football circuit. Even with their golden generation containing Premier League greats like Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba, who later went to win the 2015 AFCON, they failed to leave a mark after qualifying for their last World Cup before their two-tournament absence, the 2014 edition hosted in Brazil. Despite starting strongly against Japan in their tournament opener, they lost their way quickly with a 2-1 defeat to Colombia and suffered stoppage-time heartbreak to Greece to bow out of the competition again.

Ivory Coast Qualification and Preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Ivory Coast had a terrific World Cup qualification, where they made it to the tournament in North America without conceding a single goal. At the same time, they scored 25 goals with 16 of them pumped in the two games against Seychelles, with the 9-0 victory sealing their place after more than a decade's absence from the global event. Understandably, the Elephants topped the goal difference metric in the CAF qualifiers and also stayed unbeaten in 10 games, winning eight of them with a point above Gabon to take the automatic spot. While their World Cup qualification was historic and memorable, the AFCON was surely not.

Entering the competition as holders after a dramatic title victory in the previous edition, Emerse Fae’s side, despite the attacking talents, laboured through their group and just edged out Gabon again to take the top spot in their group ahead of Cameroon, only on goals scored. While the 3-0 victory against Burkina Faso in the Round of 16 seemed to have changed the mood, suffering quarterfinal elimination at the hands of an under par Egyptian team stung. The side, though, seemed to get back on track as shown in the March friendlies with a big win against South Korea and defeating Scotland 1-0, giving them good momentum ahead of the World Cup.

Ivory Coast Squad for FIFA World Cup 2026

Goalkeepers: Yahia Fofana (Rizespor), Mohamed Koné (Aston Villa), Alban Lafont (Panathinaikos)

Defenders: Emmanuel Agbadou (Besiktas), Clément Akpa (Auxerre), Ousmane Diomandé (Sporting CP), Guéla Doué (Strasbourg), Ghislain Konan (Gil Vicente), Odilon Kossounou (Atalanta), Evan Ndicka (Roma), Wilfried Singo (Galatasaray)

Midfielders: Seko Fofana (FC Porto), Parfait Guiagon (Sporting Charleroi), Christ Inao Oulaï (Trabzonspor), Franck Kessié (Al Ahli), Ibrahim Sangaré (Nottingham Forest), Jean-Mickaël Seri (Maribor)

Forwards: Simon Adingra (Monaco), Ange-Yoan Bonny (Inter), Amad Diallo (Manchester United), Oumar Diakité (Cercle Brugge), Yan Diomandé (RB Leipzig), Evann Guessand (Crystal Palace), Nicolas Pépé (Villarreal), Bazoumana Touré (Hoffenheim), Elye Wahi (Nice)

Head Coach: Emerse Fae

Emerse Fae has made some crucial decisions for the World Cup roster for Ivory Coast. 33-year-old Wilfried Zaha has not been included despite being on the roster for the AFCON. The former Crystal Palace star featured in three games at the tournament and has been in decent form with MLS club Charlotte FC, on loan from Galatasaray, but failed to gain a call-up here. Had he been, it would have certainly been his final international competition for his national side. While Zaha played in the AFCON, there was a surprise omission of  Nicolas Pépé in the squad for that tournament, which he showed his displeasure about publicly. However, he has since seemed to have gained the coach's attention and he has recalled the former Arsenal player to the 2026 World Cup squad after he guided Villarreal to back-to-back qualification for the Champions League. Ange-Yoan Bonny, who enjoyed a breakout season at Inter and tasted Serie A success, is looking to earn his national team debut on the global stage, while Nice's Elye Wahi, who just played his first international games in March, is set to experience his first major competition with the Elephant this summer.

Strengths of Ivory Coast Football Team

The squad is full of talent and probably the best one the Ivory Coast has acquired since the golden generation that played the 2014 World Cup. Every area of the pitch is packed with quality, top prospects and depth that could make them difficult to handle. They have a reliable defence anchored by Evan Ndicka, three fantastic midfielders, including captain Franck Kessié, who can control the tempo of the match and an attack filled with mesmerising talent with a variety of options to choose from. The latest addition of Bonny and Wahi only adds to the talented pack that also has a lot of versatility. Their quick pace and energy are fundamental aspects of this side, with a lot of youthfulness and full of stamina. The Elephants are coming with a total package to the tournament and if they click, they can certainly trouble a lot of sides.

Weaknesses of Ivory Coast Football Team

While the squad is extremely talented and doesn't rely on a sole goalscorer, they lack a prolific striker in the team. Even though they have Sebastian Haller on the standby list, he is not part of the coach's plan for the main squad and has been severely out of form this season. The striker whom they rely on is Evann Guessand, who is second string to Jean Philippe Mateta at Crystal Palace and has merely scored one goal in the past Premier League season. The 26-year-old also scored just twice in the CAF qualifiers and bagged only one in the AFCON. Such figures are not trustworthy, so the side might turn to Elye Wahi or Bonny, but both are untested at this level. The squad has also been criticised for crumbling under pressure, especially in knockout and lacking the mentality to get them over the line, factors that will concern Fae, having also drawn in a competitive group.

Key player: Amad Diallo

Even with more talented forward options who have been far more productive in front of goal, Amad Diallo will be the key player for the Ivory Coast at the World Cup. It is unfair to judge the 23-year-old based on his club form with Manchester United, where he made only five goal contributions this season. The recent Africa Cup of Nations was proof that Amad exert brilliance when he dons the Ivory Coast shirt. The former Atalanta player scored three goals and provided an assist in the competition in his team's run to the quarterfinals. He scored the winner against Mozambique, scored an important strike against Cameroon and popped up with a goal and assist against Burkina Faso to secure Ivory Coast's passage to the knockouts. His big-game player attributes shone, and he will be determined to take it to the next level at the World Cup.

Now at Panathinaikos, Alban Lafont is a confirmed name in between the sticks and he will have a solid defence in front of him. Galatasaray's Wilfred Singo is a versatile player capable of playing both at right back and centre-back, but he will be optimised in the former role here. Otherwise, he has good competition from 17-year-old Strasbourg starlet Guela Doue, who featured in all AFCON games and three times in the World Cup qualifications. N'Dicka is now hitting his prime and is coming off a strong season helping Roma to secure Champions League football, hoping to carry the energy with the national team now. Even though he picked up an injury which will take until early June to recover, the 26-year-old is an unshakable name at the back. Either Atalanta's Odilon Kossounou or Ousmane Diomande, who is attracting top clubs in Europe, will pair him with Clement Akpa or Ghislain Konan, taking the left flank. The midfield trio of Seko Fofana, Ibrahim Sangaré and Kessié, with Jean-Mickaël Seri, could also slot in, could rival the best midfields in the tournament.

They are excellent in ball control, possession, drive and bring a lot of physicality in the middle of the park. They also have good passing ranges and goal productivity, especially captain Kessie, whose late runs in the box and long-range drives could be lethal. Seko Fofana's all-around contribution and being an engine also help a lot. On the right, Diallo looks to be a mainstay, although he has been used at times as an impact substitute, like in the AFCON. If it is the case, then Bazouma Traore of Hoffenheim or Oumar Diakite, who actually started some games in AFCON, could be the option. Ivory Coast might have the two best talents in one position in the tournament, with the left wing looking their strongest area. 24-year-old Simon Adingra of Morocco can play anywhere in that area of the pitch, but eyes will be on RB Leipzig star, 19-year-old Yan Diomande, who is attracting top clubs in Europe with a lucrative move heavily tipped this summer. The player who can play in both flanks has scored 12 goals and produced eight assists with his club, while his two-footed sharpness, ball control, pace and being a massive threat in one v one make him difficult to defend.

Ivory Coast FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

No doubt, the Ivory Coast has been placed in a difficult group, but if they don’t make it to the knockout stages, with eight-best third placed teams progressing in the new 48-team World Cup, then it will be an utter failure for this talented side. Keeping aside Germany, despite their group stage elimination in the past two World Cups, the Elephants could realistically challenge Ecuador and the debutants, Curacao. Gaining a point against the South American side, who are solid at the back and have played a draw in nine of their past 11 games, in their tournament opener will be a great start. In that case, a defeat against Die Mannschaft will not matter much, as they will play the smallest nation ever at the global stage with the chance to secure victory and increase the goal count to be safe. Even though the Ivory Coast has shown signs of struggle against low blocks, their talented attack should have enough to see them through. Regardless, the real test for them lies in the knockout. If they finish second, they could face Norway or fellow African nation Senegal from Group I, considering France wins it, in the Round of 32, while finishing third could lock them up with a heavyweight meeting. It is left to see if this young and talented Ivory Coast can hit its true potential and make it to the Round of 16 at least.
