Curacao FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

Curacao has become the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup after their historic qualification for the 2026 edition and they are now ready to continue their fairytale in the finals. Having naturalised several Dutch-born players to strengthen the team, the Blue Wave want to give a good account of themselves after all the hard work of reaching this stage. After a brief distraction with the managerial conflict that once again brought their star coach Dick Advocaat to the hotseat after he left due to personal reasons post-qualifiers, the nation from the Caribbean islands is back on, making the best preparation to tackle the colossal challenges of the Ivory Coast, Ecuador and four-time winners Germany in Group E.

Curacao Qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Despite the CONCACAF region receiving an additional three slots for a direct qualification to the expanded 48-team tournament due to Canada, Mexico and the USA taking up the host slots for the 2026 World Cup, few could have predicted Curacao to be among the sides making it to the finals. Dick Advocaat’s side surprised everyone by etching their name in the competition’s history book by becoming the smallest country by both population and land area to qualify for the global stage, ahead of many formerly qualified teams also placed higher in the FIFA rankings.

The Blue Waves had an excellent qualifying campaign where they topped their second round group of the CONCACAF qualifiers by winning every game. They extended that momentum into the third round, where they stayed unbeaten again, magnificently, with their path secured after a goalless draw to Jamaica that took them away. With the result, Curacao finished a point above the Reggae Boyz in the top spot to secure the historic World Cup qualification. Their unbelievable performance also includes scoring the most goals in the overall qualifiers with 28, while also maintaining an unreal solidity of conceding just three in the same period.

Curacao Form and Preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Having secured their qualification directly to the 2026 World Cup back in November last year, they had the time to use the March 2026 international window to play some in preparation for the main event this summer. They played Asian outfits, China and Australia, with their six-game unbeaten run coming to an end with a 2-0 loss against the former, while they were defeated 5-1 by the Socceroos. They managed to level the scores at one point in the match, but their defensive integrity was lost completely in the final 20 minutes of the game. However, these results came when Fred Rutten was in charge after Dick Advocaat left following the result. Now with the Dutch coach back, the side will care little about the results and begin the real preparation with a friendly against Scotland also lined up just weeks before their World Cup opener.

Head Coach: Dick Advocaat

The key factor for Curaçao’s sensational qualification to the 2026 World Cup was using their diaspora to integrate players born in the Netherlands, including high-profile talents like former Manchester United player Tahith Chong and captain Leandro Bacuna, who were blended into local heritage and a squad with extensive experience in the Eredivisie and English leagues. The team is also vastly experienced, with several players earning 50 or more caps for their nation. However, there are some young faces as well, particularly in midfield, aged 22 or a little above. At least eight players have fewer than 10 caps for the national side.

Strengths of Curacao Football Team

The fundamental part in which the team is built is its core strength, which is using the experience of their diaspora of Dutch-born players competing at the highest level in the Eredivisie, the top-flight league of the Netherlands and others in various tiers of the English league. The team is also defensively sound, as proven in their qualifying journey, with a strong organisation to make it hard for their opposition to break down. The side shares a strong bond with their manager, Dick Advocaat, who is also Dutch, as they revolted to get him back when he was available again, which underlines the togetherness and will serve as an important factor in the tournament. Their manager is also vastly experienced, with a staggering 46-year managerial career with the Blue Waves already thriving under his guidance.

Weaknesses of Curacao Football Team

Even though Curaçao has been proven strong defensively, the back four has hardly been tested outside of the CONCACAF region. The challenge in the World Cup is a different kind altogether, with the back four might struggle in front of attacks that produce more aggression and quality, even though they have top-flight experience in that position. It is left to see how much the situation around the chaotic manager change disrupted the preparation for the World Cup, following the sudden departure of Advocaat and the players going against the manager who replaced him. While the squad has a lot of experienced heads, no one has played in a tournament like this before. Placed in a tough group with a former champion, this would have been mightily important for the side.

Manager: Dick Advocaat

The curator behind Curacao’s historical achievement of World Cup qualification, Dick Advocaat, will be leading a team to the global stage for the third time, having been on the sideline for his home nation, the Netherlands, in the 1994 World Cup, also hosted in the USA and as head coach of South Korea in the 2006 World Cup. Aged 78, he will become the oldest coach to manage a team at the biggest competition of all. However, at one point, it didn’t look like Advocaat would set the record after he abruptly ended his managerial stint in February 2026, having helped the Blue Waves secure qualification. He resigned because of his daughter's health issues, prompting the board to appoint Fred Rutten to lead the team for the finals. The appointment turned sour as players showed their discontent with the new coach, forcing the national team to reappoint Advocaat to the role, only a day before the squad selection and a month to go for the World Cup, with the pressure also coming from their main sponsor, Corendon Dutch Airlines. Now back in his familiar surroundings, it is ideal that he will be more motivated than ever before to manage the side in the premier competition, having contributed immensely to the nation’s greatest sporting moment.

How will the Curacao lineup be at the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Curacao is expected to line up in a 4-3-3 formation with a defensive block, maintaining the personnel that started regularly in the qualifiers and contributed immensely. The trusted veteran Eloy Room, who is one of the longest-serving players of the national team and the oldest player in the squad at 37, will remain as number one between the sticks, even with more number options in hand due to his experience. Roshon van Eijma and either PSV’s Armando Obispo or Jurien Gaari could fill in to give a physical presence in the backline as well as flexibility.

Advocaat has a wealth of talent in midfield, including the dynamic brotherly duo of Leandro and Juninho Bacuna, the former doing the captaincy for the side with sheer leadership qualities and the latter being the creative benchmark of scoring three goals in qualifying.

The 22-year-old Livano Comenencia's late attacking runs and clinical finishing make it a fantastic trio in the middle of the park. Tahith Chong is an exciting prospect up front who debuted with the Blue Wave in September 2025, showcasing his qualities, while Kenji Gorre is a real player on the left, having contributed to six goals, scoring and assisting three, in the qualifiers. The 31-year-old is coming back from a knee injury that has kept him out since April, so we might see Jeremy Antonisse sometimes picked above him for fitness reasons, although his experience and goal involvement are crucial. The wingers will play around the target forwards Jurgen Locadia, who has competition with Jearl Margaritha and Brandley Kuwas for his position.

Curacao v Ivory Coast - Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia (01:30)

Curacao opened their historic World Cup tournament with a gigantic fixture against Germany on 14 June 2026 at the Houston stadium, which will be a grand occasion for the nation to make themselves heard. Their second group stage game is against a solid Ecuador team at Kansas City on 21 June 2026, with their final group game against African giants Ivory Coast in Philadelphia falling four days later.

Curacao FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

Like most other CONCACAF nations in the tournament, Curacao are drawn in a difficult group with highly ranked opposition, with avoiding embarrassment more than anything topping the priority list for the side. Despite having many Dutch-born players in the team with extensive experience in Eredivisie, they are still the third-lowest-ranked nation in the competition, which makes it very tough for them, even with additional qualifying slots available for the knockouts in the group stage of the now 48-team tournament. Their manager, Dick Advocaat, has experience in managing teams in the World Cup, but apart from a journey to the quarterfinals with the Netherlands, he has not managed much, although his South Korean team failed just a point short of making it into the knockouts in 2006. However, this challenge is totally different from the rest as a group stage exit likely outcome for the Blue Waves, who will take pride in being in this competition and hope to create a moment, even if it is a small one, to uplift a nation.
