Portugal vs Croatia FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Preview

Portugal will be disappointed with not finishing first in their group, as it not only fails to meet the expectation but also leaves them with a competitive tie in the Round of 32, against Croatia, who, even if not at their best, are a dangerous prospect to face. Roberto Martinez’s side could only draw against DR Congo in their World Cup opener in an unimpressive performance, but seemed to clear the noise with a massive 6-0 victory, with, most importantly, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice. However, their superstar, who bellowed ‘I am back’ in front of the cameras after the second game, drew a blank again in the goalless draw against Colombia in another underwhelming performance from the Selecao and if not for Diogo Costa, coupled with the opposition’s poor finishing, the result could have been different, albeit with several changes to their starting eleven. So, Portugal has to settle for the runners-up spot to qualify for the knockout stage for the sixth time in their history. The former Belgium national team boss will want to lift the spirits of the side, as despite everything, they have completed a flawless group stage and are carrying an eight-game unbeaten streak into the Round of 32. Interestingly, Portugal faced a similar scenario in Euro 2016, where they had an underwhelming group stage campaign but managed to lift the trophy. Incidentally, they faced Croatia in the first knockout round on their way to success, so they feel this is a good omen for the team, who, unlike the tournament hosted in France, is a favourite for this contest. It will be a huge shock if a far more gifted side with a more front-foot approach than the previous regime gets eliminated from the first stage of the knockouts and also considering they reached the quarterfinal stage in Qatar with a less glamorous side. Despite showing every sign of a team in transition, Croatia recovered superbly from their opening defeat to England to book a place in the knockout stage for the fourth consecutive World Cup. Zlatko Dalić's side knew they needed a positive result against Ghana in their final group game after defeating Panama in their second outing, and they delivered under pressure with an entertaining 2-1 victory. The victory secured second place behind England to qualify for the Round of 32, but their group stage campaign left a lot to ponder. Their 4-2 loss against the Three Lions exposed their fragilities, while a hard-fought 1-0 win against Panama did not help their cause, with Dominic Livakovic’s strong hands ensuring the victory. However, a tweak in formation to a back four and a more attacking thrust got them their reward in the final game, even though Petar Sucic’s first-half opener was cancelled out by Derrick Luckassen from a free kick, only for Nikola Vlasic to grab an 83rd-minute equaliser with the nation’s legend Luka Modric becoming the oldest player to register a World Cup assist in the process. That result helped them to overtake Ghana on goal difference, but with little favour,  finishing two points behind Group L winners England, as they are going to face Portugal in the battle to survive in the contest. Despite winning 11 of their last 16 matches in all competitions, the four defeats during this period have come against top-ranked opposition, while they have lost seven of their last 10 meetings with the Selecao, painting a grim picture. Still, they have the motivation of their historic past two editions and with the last members of their golden generation, will want to upset the odds here.
