Premier League 2026-27 season preview featuring Arsenal and the biggest top-six storylines

The Premier League is back, but the 2026-27 season arrives with a very different landscape at the top of English football. It is shaping up to be one of the most exciting ones in its history. Very few campaigns have witnessed the ‘top six’ going through such a huge transformation and squad overhaul ahead of a new season, signalling the challenge in the league has outgrown itself. Arsenal are finally champions and they are now at a unique stage to defend their crown which will be a mesmerising watch. However, the most fascinating thing to look forward to in the upcoming season is the series of new faces that will take charge of the big hitters at a crucial stage for each club. Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool will have new managers guiding them, while Manchester United have permanently hired a club legend for the managerial role. The season kicks off on 21st August 2026 and there are some of the biggest things to look forward to as another Premier League campaign gets underway.

Arsenal’s title defense

After 22 years of agony, Arsenal finally achieved what they were looking for, becoming Premier League champions last season. Following several runners-up finishes, three seasons in a row before getting over the line, club legend Mikel Arteta accomplished what he was appointed for back in December 2019. The Gunners dominated at the top of the table for much of the season, but it seemed they would once again crumble at the crucial time when a torrid March allowed Manchester City to overtake them, alongside missing out on the chance for a historical quadruple. However, they didn’t let history repeat itself, recovering strongly and finishing with the crown on their head. Now comes the hard part, which is to defend the prestigious title with only City able to do so in recent memory in the Premier League era. Chelsea are the only London club to have retained the honour this century, while Arsenal haven’t managed to produce the feat in a top-flight league since back in 1934-35 when they won it three times in a row.  So, the task for the North London side is enormous as the current squad has not been in such a situation before. The Champions League hunt will also be on for the side after they went close to winning it after reaching the final in Budapest last season.

The Premier League success for Arsenal was built on a strong defensive foundation consisting of the excellent centre-back partnership of Gabriel and William Saliba, with the reliable hands of David Raya, who won the Golden Glove for the third season in a row and now eyes the first keeper in the history of the league to win it four straight times. However, fitness concerns for Saliba mean the Gunners will have to find a way to cope without him at least for the start of the 2026-27 season, but the signing of Ezri Konsa and Christian Mosquera turning out to be an able replacement when called for shows it might not be an issue after all. The attack was not the best part for the side, but the introduction of Christos Tzolis, who has started his Arsenal career on a high after joining from Club Brugge, might help Arteta go back to his initial forward-thinking approach and also to replace the departed Belgian star Leandro Trossard. With the rest of the so-called top six changing reigns and City losing Rodri to Barcelona in addition to the revolutionary manager Pep Guardiola departing the club, Arsenal might find the race a bit easier this time. If the 3-0 victory over the Cityzens in the Community Shield is a statement of what is to come and captain Martin Odegaard looks to be at his absolute best, also earning the man of the match award in the game, after massive fitness concerns last season, Arteta’s side might run away with the league this time.

Managerial merry-go-round in ‘Top Six’ clubs

City without Guardiola

For the first time in over a decade, Manchester City will not have the familiar face of their star manager, Pep Guardiola, animated on the touchline after their legendary Spaniard boss cut ties with the club at the end of last season. Guardiola made City an elite force domestically and continentally, gifting the club a stunning six Premier League titles and completing a historic treble in the 2022-23 season, in which they also lifted the Champions League for the first time in their history. He also transformed how English football is viewed and built unforgettable tactical rivalries with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and later with his assistant, Arteta, when he joined Arsenal. City will have to craft the future without him, but carry forward his legacy of continued success, which is as difficult as it gets.

The club has turned to Guardiola’s assistant in ṭhe treble winning team, former Leicester and Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, to lead the charge from the 2026-27 season, offering a similar brand of football and success in his former jobs backing him. However, it seems to be the toughest job to take in the Premier League at the moment. City lost World Cup Golden Ball winner Rodri to La Liga giants Barcelona, having gone close to signing for their rivals Real Madrid this summer. The Spaniard anchored the midfield for seven years at the club, contributing immensely to their success, as it was apparent that the team dropped to a lower level when he was often sidelined for the last two seasons. Consequently, City has not won the Premier League for the last two seasons, losing their usual dominance and increasing pressure on Maresca to deliver, especially after losing their star player entirely.

In addition, another midfield great for City for the same period and also integral to their success, Bernardo Silva, also left for Real Madrid this summer. Veteran defender John Stones also made a free switch to Italian giants Inter. The club has dived into the market to bring in the highly rated Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a fee of $155 million, with a huge price tag to shoulder and big shoes to fill in. They still have their magnificent goalscorer, Erling Haaland, who will be gunning for a fourth Premier League Golden Boot after a stellar World Cup campaign where he helped Norway qualify for their first quarterfinal appearance in their history. Yet, there is still a lot of work to be done, as proven by their 3-0 loss to defending champions in the Community Shield a week before the season kicks off, making life without Pep an interesting watch

Iraola’s era at Liverpool

Liverpool went through a horror title defence last season, finishing outside the top four, in fifth and a good 25 points behind champions Arsenal. They secured Champions League football only because of English clubs’ excellent performance in Europe in the previous campaign, which allowed an extra European Performance Spot (EMS) for the Premier League in this season’s League Phase. Despite having the backing from the board throughout the campaign, the title-winning coach from last year, Arne Slot, was relieved of his duties. It was an emotional campaign for the Reds, who lost Diogo Jota to an unfortunate tragedy at the start of it, while it became the final campaign for star man Mohamed Salah after almost a decade at the club. The Egyptian fell out with Slot, leading to his performance being compromised, with him eventually deciding on a tearful goodbye, achieving legendary status and leaving as one of the Premier League’s greats.

So, the 2026-27 season is set to be quite a unique one for Liverpool as they brought in the Premier League’s most wanted, Andoni Iraola, as the new manager of the club after his sensational work with Bournemouth, transforming them from a mid-table club to European football challengers. The Spaniard now has the job to bring the heyday back to Liverpool with his exciting football philosophy to further build his credibility around his portfolio that got him assigned to this role at this level. The Reds also had a quieter summer window last year, where they spent huge bucks and broke spending records in recruiting Aleksandar Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, with only the latter shining in a miserable campaign. The stress has been on the defence with Ibrahima Konate leaving for Real Madrid on a free while January signing Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo, on loan from Barcelona, have joined to partner Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool have big news for the future with the Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos-led consortium buying a minority stake and elevating the potential at the club, but for now Iraola has to do wonders with what is currently in the store.

Alonso time at Chelsea

After what looked like a promising period with Chelsea returning to the Champions League and winning the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup last summer, the Blues quickly went downhill again in a campaign that broke a series of unwanted records. Enzo Maresca’s flirting with the managerial job at Manchester City led to his sacking, while his replacement Liam Rosenior only made things worse. Eventually, the five-time Premier League winners finished as low as 10th on the table, their second-worst finish under the Clearlake ownership and missing European football for the first time since they took charge. There was a significant shake-up as the club appointed Xabi Alonso as manager even before the last season ended, highlighting the ownership's desperation to stabilise the situation before it deteriorated further. The Liverpool legend came into the limelight when he guided Bayer Leverkusen to an invincible Bundesliga season, breaking the monopoly of Bayern Munich, but also for a miserable time at his former club Real Madrid, where he lasted for only the first half of the season.

Many felt the magnitude of that job was too early for him and his time at Los Blancos should not be the sole parameter to judge his appointment. Alonso played a possession-based, fluid tactical football with his best time at Leverkusen, where he guided a young and talented squad to glory, something that will align with Chelsea. The owners initiated a project to recruit young potential players and develop them into future stars of the team, but this strategy has not been successful. Moreover, that Leverkusen team contained experienced stars as well, so the board abandoned their transfer strategy to go for veteran signings like Danny Welbeck and ex-Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson to add the much-needed senior figures in the squad while also breaking the British transfer record fee to bring in a Premier League-proven star like Morgan Rodgers from Aston Villa. This indicates that owners are finally putting the onus on managers to make the crucial decision in squad building and not simply act as head coach like with the previous appointments. Alonso’s arrival has changed the transfer strategy and fans will wish he brings changes to Chelsea’s on-field performance and helps the club return to old glory with no European football to worry about this season.

Carrick at the wheel

Manchester United scripted the most thrilling turnaround last season when they looked destined to have another below-par campaign after suffering the worst finish in their Premier League history in 2025. After former midfielder Michael Carrick took charge on an interim basis for the second time at the club in January this year following the worst managerial tenure under Ruben Amorim, it changed everything. The club legend transformed the club’s fortunes dramatically, making the signings of last summer to fire and underperforming stars to find confidence, which was not finding its feet in the unworkable back three system that the Portuguese boss was stubborn to move on from. United went from struggling to get into the top six to finishing not only third on the table but also giving real problems to title contenders Manchester City and eventual champions Arsenal. It secured them Champions League football for the first time after two seasons. The Red Devils lost just twice under the star midfielder and collected 12 wins in 17 league games he oversaw. Eventually, United finished third on the Premier League chart with 71 points from 38 games.

Such an excellent return rewarded Carrick with a permanent role for the new season, with the Red Devils hoping that they return to their absolute best under him. Having made some effective signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos and players like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha looking to carrying forward their excellent show last time, the squad is more motivated than ever to deliver and are aiming to be more than just a top four contender this time. However, while more signings are lined up, there is criticism of the club not pushing for more signings especially in the defence which even at their best period last season looked vulnerable. The rest of the pack going big this summer in transformation, the need for it increases. Nevertheless, the charming presence of Carrick and his excellent in-game management is giving hopes to the fans that he will help the club out from its barren days.

Spurs’s Revival

Tottenham Hotspur suffered probably their worst Premier League campaign in club history last season, as they nearly got relegated. They had to go through three managers to rescue their abysmal campaign. The Lilywhites only managed to survive on the final day and were also helped by eventually relegated West Ham’s poor form. Roberto De Zerbi steadied the ship in the final seven games of the season following his appointment in March after Igor Tudor’s forgettable short spell in charge, who himself took over from an awful period under Thomas Frank. Spurs finished 17th, the same position as last year, but they were far more chaotic and got engaged in the relegation dogfight, which made it worse. However, with the club going on a spending spree this summer and De Zerbi taking his first full season in charge, the club wants to recapture themselves in the new campaign with the hope of creating good memories this time.

Spurs spent around $323 million on their transfers, the majority coming from the signing of star midfielders like highly rated Mateus Fernandes who cost $116 million from West Ham and the eye-catching $133 million move of Italy star Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. Center-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton costed $69.8 million approx while the club also made shrewd free-agent signings like Liverpool’s hero left-back Andy Robertson, talented center-back Marcos Senesi and goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka. There are more arrivals clocked with the club actively pursuing Savinho of Manchester City and another winger in Cody Gakpo from the Reds. Apart from the big departure of Christian Romero to Atletico Madrid, Djed Spence to Inter and shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario to Juventus on loan, the club has kept hold of key players like Micky van de Ven and World Cup winner Pedro Porro by extending their contract. In all, it is left to see whether Spurs revived after such a massive overhaul or De Zerbi brings unwanted pressure.
