Wolves vs Arsenal ended in a shock 2-2 draw after Riccardo Calafiori's own goal at the end helped the former snatch a point at the Molineux. Calafiori has been impressive whenever he has played for Arsenal. However, his time at the Emirates has so far been filled with frequent injury issues, and there are strong rumours that Mikel Arteta and Arsenal might soon decide to sell the Italian.
Calafiori has managed to make 20 appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League this season, and he's directly been involved in 3 goals as well. His appearances for Arsenal in all other competitions have been extremely limited due to his fitness issues.
Transfer report claims Arsenal may end up selling Riccardo Calafiori due to fitness issues
A previous transfer report from Football insider had stated that Arsenal are open to the idea of selling Riccardo Calafiori this summer due to growing concerns over his injury record. While the 23-year-old is an important part of Mikel Arteta’s plans when fit, his repeated fitness issues in a short period have raised doubts about his long-term reliability.
According to the same report, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has said Arsenal would consider offers if they arrive, as Arteta wants a deep, dependable squad capable of competing across all competitions every season.
Our thoughts on Arsenal potentially selling Riccardo Calafiori
There is no doubt that Riccardo Calafiori is a talented player, and he's still just 23 as well. Thus, he still has plenty of time to develop himself into one of the best players in his position. However, at a club like Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, the standard set has been so high that merely having enough talent won't be enough, as you'll need to be fit throughout the season as well. This is where Calafiori is struggling, as his inability to remain fit for long periods might be a huge negative in the eyes of Mikel Arteta.
We personally don't think Arsenal are looking to sell the player so soon considering his talent, but there certainly does seem to be an element of truth in the article which suggests that the club's patience might be wearing thin due to his repeating injury issues.
Let us wait and see if Calafiori does end up as a superstar at Arsenal, or Arteta and the board find him surplus to requirements at the Emirates.
