Turkey FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

Ending a 24-year hiatus, a talent-packed Turkey squad will travel to North America this summer to grace the World Cup stage again. The Crescent Star made the magnificent leap under Italian boss, Vincenzo Montella, who would be urging his side to replicate their third-place finish in their last appearance, knowing their potential to be one of the darkhorses in the competition. Doing so in an expanded competition will be a true challenge for the side, as they also face a tricky group containing Australia, Paraguay and one of the 2026 World Cup co-hosts, the USA. One thing is certain: Turkey will bring mesmerising football in the tournament orchestrated by some of the best talents around.

Turkey FIFA World Cup History

When Turkey last qualified for the World Cup, the hot talents of the current squad, Kenan Yildiz and Arda Guler, were not even born as their nation achieved its best finish in the tournament in the 2002 edition hosted in South Korea and Japan. It was only their second appearance in the competition since their debut in 1954, when they exited the group stage despite recording their joint-biggest win, a 7-0 thrashing of South Korea. Despite losing their group opener against Brazil in a heated game where three of their players were sent off, who they will meet again in the semifinal stage, Turkey managed to gain composure and made a fantastic run, which included finishing second in their group, but on goal difference, as they drew with third-placed Costa Rica but beat China 3-0 in the final group game to have the edge.

They showed remarkable solidity in the knockout stage, eliminating co-host Japan and then-tournament’s suprise package Senegal by 1-0 victories to reach the last four. The Crescent Star faced the eventual champions in the round again and they were given their own taste of their medicine. After a Ronaldo goal early in the second half, Brazil shut shop, contrary to their identity to frustrate Turkey and sealed their place in the final. However, it was a happy ending for the side as they clinched a 3-2 thrilling win against the competition’s other host, South Korea, in the third-place match, achieving a podium finish in an historical campaign.

Turkey Qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Despite suffering a 6-0 drubbing by Spain in their second qualifying game in front of their own fans, Turkey managed to hit the true potential of their talented squad by ending a 24-year wait for a FIFA World Cup appearance, securing qualification for the 2026 tournament under the guidance of coach Vincenzo Montella. They also managed to win the other games in comprehensive fashion and held La Roja to a draw in the reverse clash to show their resurgence. Ultimately, the Crescent Stars finished second in their UEFA qualifying group behind the reigning European champions to secure a place in the European play-offs.

Despite defensive question marks, Turkey then overcame Romania in the semi-final and edged past Kosovo 1-0 in the play-off final, ending the opposition’s cinderella story, with Kerem Aktürkoğlu scoring the decisive goal that sealed their place in North America. Led by a talented new generation featuring Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız, Turkey will make only their third World Cup appearance and their first since their historic third-place finish in 2002. They also made an ideal preparation for the World Cup by winning their pre-World Cup friendlies, a 4-0 thrashing of North Macedonia and a 2-1 victory over Venezuela, which extended their unbeaten run to eight games with seven wins ahead of the tournament. More in details on Turkey’s Qualification journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Strengths of Turkey Football Team

Undoubtedly, this is the most talented squad Turkey has had for a while and not just any other prodigies but those who play key roles in big European clubs and has proven themselves in major competitions both for club and country. Very few teams can possess such a profile of youngsters like Güler and Yildiz in the same at the international level, added with the maturity to be a difference maker for the team. They are threatening unit going forward with an enormous depth in that department and teams won’t fancy facing them for their raw pace, technical flexibility and creativity. The midfield is also fascinating, providing control and dictation having an equally spectacular depth in the position. The same could also be said about their defence as they have several options at centre-backs and quality full-backs as well. The squad has a fantastic balance of youth and the experienced heads of Abdülkerim Bardakcı, Çağlar Söyüncü, Merih Demiral and Hakan Çalhanoğlu. Having it in the midfield and defence especially lowers the risk of the side getting overwhelmed in tight battles. They have a mastermind in Vincenzo Montella, whose tactics help the team use their full potential. His flexibility to use different ways to have dominance in games gives a freshness every time rather than getting stuck in one style of play.

Weaknesses of Turkey Football Team

The high-pressing strategy of Montella with full-backs pulled up high in attacking overloads and a high line with centre-backs not having the best recovery pace often leaves them vulnerable in defence if they are bypassed by teams with pace on the counter. Defensive consistency in general, is an issue for the team. They have also been found guilty of losing concentration and complacency while in an advantageous position. Lack of emotional control in a pressurised situation could slip the game away from them, especially when the team relies on the young faces to do the trick for them. Despite having a fascinating duo in Guler and Yildiz to help in the attack, Turkey lacks a prolific striker up front, forcing them to play with a false nine. Even though it helps in troubling defences with the combination play and positional interchange, the lack of a focal point in the box could starve the team without a proper finisher of the chances created. The lack of tournament experience could also be a factor that unfavours the side.

Key Player: Arda Guler

The heartbeat for Turkey at just 21 years of age, Arda Guler has come a long way from becoming the highly demanded talent at Fenerbache to becoming the future star of Real Madrid. Now he is ready to play a pivotal role for his national team at the biggest tournament of all. The creator showed that he can shoulder big responsibility last season with his club, especially in the Champions League and has already proven his calibre for Turkey with Euro 2024 being a prime example. His three-goal contributions helped Turkey reach the quarterfinal stage of the competition and now his five-goal contributions in the UEFA qualifiers helped his nation break their long exile from the global stage. Guler's extraordinary assist for the winner against Romania in the semifinal of the playoffs described his elite creating skills, while he has the eye to score spectacular goals. Having the versatility to play anywhere on the frontline and midfield, Turkey possess a real asset to be a game changer for them at the tournament.

Talent to Watch: Kenan Yildiz

While Guler is the poster boy for the Crescent Star, Kenan Yildiz is tasked with bringing the fireworks to the World Cup this summer. One of the talents to watch out for in the tournament, the explosive left winger will give a hard time for the opposition from his flank with his speed, change of direction, flair, elite dribbling qualities and finesse. He can cut in to score some of the magnificent stunners. At the same age as Guler, the player who came through Juventus and remained their charm in the club’s uninspiring days also contributed immensely to Turkey qualifying for the finals, scoring three crucial goals in the qualifiers. He is a joy to watch, combining technical intelligence with physical power and he already contributed immensely last time he was in the USA for a competition, in the new Club World Cup last summer, scoring three goals and delivering an assist in four games there. Fans will beg for a repeat of it. Yildiz, the surname literally meaning ‘star’, is expected to be one for Turkey when they need him the most.

Manager: Vincenzo Montella

Vincenzo Montella gave a prime example of a manager changing the total complexity of a side as his appointment in September 2023 helped stabilise a Turkish team that had often failed to hit the mark with a lack of proper management, to become a force in competitions. The nation’s fascinating run to the Euro quarterfinals in just his second year in charge and now breaking their long drought away from the World Cup showed the resurgence and change of mentality he has brought in. Montella has also brought a modern system of pressing and attacking style of play, making the team more front-footed. Not sticking to one selected way of playing, his formation tweaks and in-game management make Turkey unpredictable while simultaneously giving them an identity of dominance. He has the tactical nuances that his predecessor lacked, which used to stifle the team from expressing itself freely. The Italian’s stylish and productive football, with his likeable character among his players, hopes to work for the team in the desired effect in North America.

How will Turkey lineup at the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Montella favours a 4-2-3-1 formation, but will adjust his strategy when necessary, while the personnel could also change thanks to the enormous depth. Uğurcan Çakır is the first choice between the sticks, with Roma’s Zeki Çelik also at the top of the pecking order at the right-back role. There will be a debate on what the centre-back pair will be in the tournament, as Turkey might go with the experienced duo of Bardakcı and the returning veteran Demiral, or a Söyüncü or an Ozan Kabak could slot in. On the left, there will be the exciting Ferdi Kadıoğlu, who had an excellent season with Brighton and scored that winning goal against Romania at the end of a terrific Guler pass in the UEFA playoffs. The Crescent star will want to use his energy and combine with Yildiz on his flank to deadly effect. While there is a wealth of options in the midfield, the pair of Çalhanoglu and İsmail Yüksek looks the ideal choice as they formed a solid unit throughout the qualifiers.

Inter’s evergreen captain is a class in his role, operating as a deep-lying playmaker and also providing leadership, while the Fenerbache star is a press resister and covers spaces. Meanwhile, Besiktas’s Orkun Kokcu will provide something entirely different, giving the energy and legs in the middle of the park while also being a creative force, having been involved in 19 goals in all competitions last season. Up top, Kerem Aktürkoğlu is expected to slot in the false nine role, or FC Porto’s Deniz Gül could have the edge if Montella prefers a proper striker, while on the right, there is a competition between Barış Yılmaz and Yunus Akgün, who can trouble the opposition better. Guler and Yildiz were finding their feet at Euro 2024; they are now the duo that the team revolves around. Their combination will be important for Turkey to make a deep run in the World Cup this summer.

Turkey FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

Turkey enter the 2026 World Cup with huge expectations riding on their shoulders, not even the class of 2002 had it and they made it to the distance in the tournament. So, it is now up to this talented bunch whether they crumble under pressure or meet the standards adequately. The team has failed repeatedly in past tournaments, with the darkhorse tag levelled at them, a feat they are not willing to repeat this summer, having finally broken the mental barrier to get to this stage. The Crescent Star can easily finish at the top of their group with the talent they have in their squad, but they have shown signs of struggling away from their home environment, although there will be a credible number of supporters from the diaspora in the US. Provided that the co-host doesn’t suffer, Turkey should be good enough to take the second spot, but it is most likely to land them with a tie against Belgium, which will be a crunching battle. Otherwise, winning their group could pin them against less-threatening opponents. Either way, Turkey has to keep reaching the Round of 16, a benchmark to really assure everyone of their potential.
