FIFA World Cup 2026 Round 1 Best XI

We are here with our 2026 FIFA World Cup Round 1 Best Team. The opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup produced plenty of memorable moments, from giant-killing performances to superstar masterclasses. Several established names lived up to expectations, while a handful of lesser-known players used the global stage to announce themselves. This Best XI combines standout performers from across the first set of fixtures, rewarding decisive attacking displays, defensive resilience and match-winning contributions. At the heart of the selection are Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, but there was also room for emerging talents and unsung heroes who made a huge impact.

Goalkeeper

Vozinha (Cape Verde)

Cape Verde's historic World Cup debut would not have ended in a famous draw without their veteran goalkeeper. The 40-year-old produced one of the performances of the tournament so far, making seven crucial saves to deny Spain in a stunning 0-0 stalemate. Calm under pressure and commanding in his area, Vozinha was deservedly named Player of the Match and instantly became one of the breakout stars of Round 1.

Defenders

Wilfried Singo (Ivory Coast)

Singo was a dominant physical presence throughout his team's opener. Strong in aerial duels and aggressive in one-on-one situations, he helped keep opposition attackers quiet while also carrying the ball forward effectively to help his Ivory Coast team win 1-0 against Ecuador

Nico Schlotterbeck (Germany)

Germany looked assured defensively and Schlotterbeck was central to that solidity. The centre-back excelled with his anticipation, distribution and ability to recover possession, making several timely interventions.

Nathaniel Brown (Germany)

One of the surprises of the opening round, Bayern-bound Nathaniel Brown combined defensive reliability with attacking intent. His overlapping runs stretched opponents and he looked comfortable on football's biggest stage as Germany crushed Curacao 7-1.

Midfielders

Yasin Ayari (Sweden)

The Brighton midfielder controlled the tempo brilliantly and displayed impressive maturity. Ayari linked defence and attack seamlessly, progressed possession efficiently and capped off an excellent performance with a decisive contribution in the final third with his 2 goals against Tunisia.

Ayyoub Bouaddi (Morocco)

Bouaddi continued to justify the hype surrounding his immense potential. Despite his young age, he dictated play confidently, won back possession regularly and showed excellent vision to unlock opposing defences in the game against Brazil.

Forwards

Elijah Just (New Zealand)

Just provided one of the biggest surprises of Round 1. The winger tormented defenders with his pace and direct running, constantly creating danger and helping New Zealand secure a memorable result with his brace in a 2-2 draw against Iran.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Even at 38 years old, Messi remains capable of producing magical moments. The Argentine legend delivered a sensational hat-trick in Argentina's opening victory against Algeria, reminding everyone why he is still among the world's elite players. His movement, creativity and finishing were simply irresistible.

Kylian Mbappé (France)

Mbappé was simply brilliant against Senegal. The French captain scored twice, terrorised defenders with his blistering pace and once again demonstrated his ability to dominate major tournaments. He already looks like one of the favourites for the Golden Boot.

Harry Kane (England)

England's captain led the line superbly against Croatia , combining clinical finishing with intelligent link-up play. Kane's movement caused constant problems and he once again proved why he remains one of the most complete strikers in international football.

Erling Haaland (Norway)

Haaland marked Norway's return to the World Cup in style by scoring twice against Iraq in a convincing victory. The Manchester City forward was ruthless inside the box and showcased his trademark composure whenever chances fell his way.

Final Thoughts

Round 1 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered an exciting blend of established superstars and emerging talents. Messi, Mbappé, Kane and Haaland predictably stole headlines, but performances from Vozinha, Ayari, Bouaddi and Elijah Just highlighted the tournament's ability to create new heroes. With many teams still finding their rhythm, this Best XI could look very different after the second round of fixtures, but these eleven players unquestionably earned their place after an outstanding opening week.
