The Bengal Super League is a new district-based football league in West Bengal, reigniting Bengal’s deep-rooted love for the beautiful game. It is an eight-team franchise model tournament, similar to the Indian Super League, played in a home-and-away round-robin format, with the winners even getting the chance to compete in the IFA Shield. The league aims to nurture and provide a platform for talents throughout the state without being city-centric. The inaugural season of the BSL began on 14 December 2025, adding a new chapter to the state’s rich footballing history and marking a landmark event that will bring passion, regional pride and drama of the highest order.
Eight teams will represent the different districts of West Bengal, namely Burdwan Blasters, Howrah Hooghly Warriors, JHR Royal City, Kopa Tigers Birbhum, FC Medinipur, North 24 Parganas FC, North Bengal United and Sundarban Bengal Auto FC. Each team is allowed to register 25 players on their roster for the competition. Teams are required to field at least seven state-grown or homegrown players in the starting eleven, including U-19 footballers. A maximum of two national-level outstation players is permitted for each side. The league will have foreigners, but only two are allowed to play at the same time. Each team has arranged some thrilling squads that will bring more excitement to the tournament.
Howrah Hooghly Warriors will be managed by Mohun Bagan’s record goalscorer and club icon, Jose Ramirez Barreto, who, as a manager, also won the Reliance Foundation league with Young Champs. The squad boasts the likes of Brazilian forward Paulo Cézar and experienced campaigners like Avilash Paul and Azharuddin Mallick, with talents like Sahil Harijan. JHR Royal City will have the lethal Robi Hansda and the foreign attraction in De Paula, while I-League winning star forward Komron Tursonov headlines Kopa Tigers Birbhum. North 24 Parganas FC is a team to watch out for, featuring players like Tanmoy Ghosh. Meanwhile, Sundarban Auto FC is also turning up the noise by including Bengal’s beloved striker Narohari Shrestha and will be managed by legend Mehtab Hossain.
