The 17-year-old Aditi Gopichand Swami created history by winning a gold medal at the women’s individual compound event in the World Archery Championships 2023. She not only became the first Indian individual to win the gold medal in the World Archery Championships history but also became the youngest to clinch the gold medal in an individual event in the Championships history in the World Cup-era (2006 and on).

Berlin, Germany, is hosting the World Archery Championships 2023. Last Friday (4 August), the Indian women’s compound team created history by winning the nation’s first gold medal in the Championships history.

Aditi brought India’s second gold medal in the World Archery Championships 2023 as she won the crown in the women’s individual compound event.

On the final day of the women’s individual compound event (5 August), Aditi first beat the Dutch Sanne de Laat (148-148) in the quarterfinal shoot-off.

Then, Aditi battled against another Indian Jyothi Surekha Vennam in the semi-final. After beating Jyothi (149-145) in the semi-final, Aditi (149) defeated Mexican Andrea Becerra (147) in the Final to win the historic gold medal.

It was the first time an Indian individual clinched the gold medal in the World Archery Championships history. The 17-year-old Aditi also recorded as the youngest to win an individual event in the World Archery Championships history (in the World Cup-era since 2006).

Meanwhile, after losing the semi-final, Jyothi secured the bronze medal for India after beating Turkish Ipek Tomruk (150-146) in the third-place battle.

Earlier, Jyothi beat another Indian Parneet Kaur in the quarterfinal of the event (149-143).

Aditi Gopichand Swami, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Parneet Kaur, all these three players were part of the historic Indian women’s compound team that won India’s first gold medal in the Championships history last Friday (4 August).
