Two-time ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions West Indies claimed a dominant win against Nepal and became the first team to secure a place for the Super 8 stage in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai hosted the West Indies vs Nepal match in Group C of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday afternoon (15th February). After the West Indies sent Nepal to bat first, Nepal scored 133/8 in 20 overs. In reply, the West Indies chased down the target in 15.2 overs after losing only one wicket.
Jason Holder's four-wicket haul destroyed Nepal batting
Nepal lost their wickets from the early part of the innings as they failed to get a motivating start. While the no.4 batter Dipendra Singh Airee scored 58 off 47 balls with three fours and three sixes, the no.8 batter Sompal Kami was their only other batter to manage the 20+ score, as he scored 26 not out off 15 balls with four fours.
Among the Caribbean bowlers, the former captain Jason Holder recorded a four-wicket haul, as the right-arm pacer had the bowling figures of 4-0-27-4.
Captain Shai Hope led from front in dominant chase
In reply, the West Indies openers had a good start with a 43-run partnership for the first wicket between Brandon King and captain Shai Hope, as they were never in the challenge in the chase. Although King was dismissed for 22 runs, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer comfortably chased the target. While the skipper Hope scored 61 off 44 balls with five fours and three sixes, Hetmyer scored 46 not out off 32 balls with four fours and two sixes.
With this win, the West Indies confidently put themselves on top of the Group C points table with six points in three games, as they won all the fixtures of the group. Earlier, they defeated Scotland and England by 35 runs and 30 runs, respectively. With this victory, the West Indies became the first team to qualify for the Super Eight stage of the tournament. In the Super Eight stage, they will be in Group 1, where their other seeded teams are the hosts India (subject to qualify), South Africa (subject to qualify), and Australia (subject to qualify). In the Super Eight stage, the West Indies will play all their matches in India.
Meanwhile, with this defeat, Nepal have been eliminated from the tournament, having lost all their first three matches of the tournament.
