The Intercontinental Championship is one of the most important and prestigious championships in WWE and it has been in WWE for over 40 years and a lot of legends from the past have held the title. People talk about the longest reigning Intercontinental Champions but few talk about the best champions of all time. The quality of the reign is more important as compared to the quantity because even a short reign full of quality is remembered.

In the case of Roman Reigns it is a perfect mixture of quantity with top class quality and these types of Reigns are extremely rare. The Intercontinental Championship had lost its importance and prestige in the past few years but a champion who will be on this list has brought back the prestige to the title.

Let’s look at the Top 5 Best Intercontinental Champions in WWE history:

1) Gunther

This is not recency bias but a fact because Gunther became the champion when the title had lost all its glory and it was a joke and so when Gunther won it, the hopes were high but it is safe to say that he has exceeded all expectations and in the 400 day reign and counting he has been ae champion he has had some of the best matches in WWE history and he has had Matches against Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, Matt Riddle, Ricochet etc and he is 55 days away from becoming the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time. And it looks like he will be the champion for a long time to come.

2) Shawn Michaels

At Number 2 is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time and he is none other than Shawn Michaels. Shawn Michaels was a 3 time Intercontinental Champion and he was the champion at that point of time when the title was hot and every wrestler wanted to hold this Championship because it was the Workhorse title. Shawn Michaels had 3 incredible Reigns and in those Reigns in the 1990s he had great matches against Razor Ramon, Jeff Jerrett, Bret Hart among so many others and this was the title that propelled him to achieving greater glory.

3) Randy Savage

Randy Savage and the Intercontinental Championship go hand in hand and he is surely one of the greatest to ever hold this Championship and he was one of the first truly great champions who brought a lot of prestige to the title. He was the champion for 414 days which for now is the 3rd longest reign in its history. He has a total of 43 TV show matches for the championship and he also had some of the best feuds against Ricky Steamboat and Tito Santana and the match he had against Ricky Steamboat at WrestleMania 3 will always stay in this minds of WWE fans as the match that gave the Intercontinental Championship it’s Glory.

4) Razor Ramon

One more legendary WWE superstar that was synonymous with the Intercontinental Championship was Razor Ramon and sadly he is no longer with us but the fans will always celebrate him and he was also a 4 time Intercontinental Champion and he had a combined reign of 437 days and he had great matches against Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart etc . And no WWE fan can ever forget the Ladder match at WrestleMania 10 for the Intercontinental Championship which is the greatest ladder match of all time. He will be missed and his contributions to raise the importance of the Intercontinental Championship will never be forgotten.

5) The Miz

The Miz is a record equalling 9 time Intercontinental Champion and this should be enough to put him in this list but The Miz is a hard worker and he held the title for close to 600 days across those 9 Reigns. The Miz was one of the best promos in WWE at that point and he was a great heel so he used all his work to have great matches against Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, Dolph Ziggler and his feud against Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship in 2016 was one of the best feuds for this title. The Miz is a first ballot WWE Hall of Famer.
