Murali Sreeshankar creates history with his second consecutive Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s long jump event when he won the silver medal at Glasgow 2026 last Wednesday (29th July).
Murali Sreeshankar claimed a silver medal
The 27-year-old Indian athlete Murali Sreeshankar strongly challenged the gold medalist Tajay Gayle from Jamaica. While the Jamaican had the first attempt with 8.08m, his fourth attempt proved to be decisive, resulting in 8.15m.
Murali started strongly with the 8.03m and 8.09m long jumps, as his second attempt put him on top before the Jamaican surpassed him. After recording two back-to-back foul attempts, the Indian finished with the 7.94m and 7.97m jumps.
Scottish long jumper Stephen Mackenzie clinched the bronze medal, as the homie closely finished behind Murali with his best jump of the day, 8.08m.
Lokesh Sathyanathan was the other Indian to present in the men’s long jump final event, as he finished in fifth place with his best jump of the day, 7.97m, which he achieved in his first attempt.
Who is Murali Sreeshankar?
Murali Sreeshankar is now a popular name in Indian athletics, as he became the first Indian to win multiple Commonwealth Games medals. In the CWG 2022 at Birmingham, he also won the silver medal with his best jump, 8.08m. He also won silver medals in the Asian Games 2022 and the Asian Athletics Championships. During the Paris Diamond League 2022, Murali became the third Indian and first Indian long jumper to finish in the top 3 in a Diamond League meet.
Although Murali qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, he failed to reach the Final. In Paris 2024, he once again qualified but couldn’t participate due to a knee injury that required surgery.
