On the opening day of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, England Women created history, while the inaugural champions and second-time hosts started the tournament with a strong 87-run win against Sri Lanka Women.
After Sri Lanka Women chose to field first in the Group 2 match, England Women scored the tournament record-breaking total of 219/1 in 20 overs, thanks to the century of the opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who scored 105 not out off 62 balls with 13 fours and one six.
In reply, Sri Lanka Women were bowled out for only 132 runs in 20 overs. Only the middle-order batters Harshitha Samarawickrama (29) and Nilakshika Silva (39) managed 20+ scores in that innings. In the meantime, the 21-year-old English left-arm bowler Freya Kemp had the bowling figures of 4-0-22-4.
