BAR vs GIR Match Preview
Barcelona started from where they left off before the international break registering a 3-0 thumping win against Osasuna on Thursday evening to move back to the top of the La Liga table. Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski were on the scoresheet in the fixture that was rescheduled due to the saddened passing of Barca’s team doctor early this month. Although the new date for the game controversially came only days before the Catalan giants' match against Girona this weekend, it did not change the plans for the side looking to maintain their eight-game winning streak in the league. Flick’s side is navigating a congested period as they will have to focus on the Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg affair against Atletico Madrid with the aggregate score incredibly tied at 4-4. Despite the minimum rest period, Barcelona cannot take the foot off the pedal to keep the dreams of a quadruple alive after pocketing the Spanish Super Cup in January this year. Visitors Girona won this tie at Lluís Companys last season but the situation was very different back then. This newly rejuvenated Barcelona team would want to show that they are a different beast now taking another three points in the bag.
That victory was part of the double over Barcelona and several other remarkable results Girona achieved in the 2023-24 season, enabling them to qualify for the Champions League for the first time. Fast forward to 2025 and Girona looks completely different to the side that created the miracle, currently sitting 13th with just 34 points from 28 games played. They remain seven points clear of the relegation zone but are 10 points away from a European football spot with 10 games to go. It is safe to say Girona has struggled massively this season having not won a single match since last month, failing to keep a clean sheet in the previous 11 games in all competitions. The 1-1 draw against relegation strugglers Valencia came as the latest disappointment for Michel’s side after Christian Stuani rescued a point for the team coming off the bench. The veteran striker will be their source of hope against fellow Catalan outfit Barcelona as the Uruguayan four times in this fixture wearing the Girona shirt. The Gironistes have suffered seven defeats since their last league win and picked up three draws in a row this month, neither of the records looking promising ahead of the face-off this weekend. Girona also lost the reverse match 4-1 in September last year.

BAR vs GIR Team News
There is controversy over fielding centre-back Inigo Martinez in the win against Osasuna with FIFA regulation stating that a player cannot feature in a club game at least five days after an international match if he has withdrawn from the national team squad due to injury. The former Athletic Club star is not expected to start this weekend anyway as part of keeping players fresh for the cup semi-final match. Pau Cubarsi and Ronald Araujo will feature in the defence instead even after the former suffered an ankle injury in the international break albeit minor. Dani Olmo became the latest to add to the injury list for Barcelona as he joined Andreas Christensen, Marc Casado, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Marc Bernal on the sideline.
Visitors Girona will also have players missing through injuries with Abel Ruiz, Jhon Solis and Ivan Martin all sidelined. The latter could be replaced by ex-Barcelona player Oriol Romeu who will join Yangel Herrera and another former Barca Arthur in midfield. Stuani could feature from the start for only the third time this season in the league and for the fifth time in all competitions. Donny van de Beek is suspended after crossing the limit of yellow card booking.
