Both Georgia and Czechia lost their Euro 2024 openers against Turkey and Portugal, respectively. While Turkey defeated European Championship debutant Georgia by 3-1, Portugal beat Czechia by 2-1 thanks to their winning goal in stoppage time.
Georgia challenged the Turkish side well, but their fighting spirit wasn’t enough for them. Although Georges Mikautadze equalized the scoreline in 32 minutes, just seven minutes after they conceded their first goal, Arda Güler’s stunner put them behind again in the 65th minute. While Georgia fought for another equalizer till the end, Kerem Akturkoglu secured Turkish victory with a late stoppage time goal into an empty net.
Czechia's too-defensive attitude cost them their game against the Euro 2016 winners Portugal. Although Czechia took a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute with their only shot on target of the match, which was brilliantly hit by Lukás Provod from outside the box, they conceded an own goal in the 69th minute. Later, in the second minute of stoppage time, Francisco Conceição netted the winning goal for Portugal. Czechia now have a huge task as they can’t afford another defeat in this tournament. Their defeat against Portugal also ended their five-match winning streak and seven-match unbeaten streak (six wins and one draw).
