MCI vs WYD Match Preview

Manchester City have a thousand more reasons to give it their all in the inaugural 32-team format Club World Cup after suffering a rare trophyless season under Pep Guardiola. The club lost their four-year Premier League defence to Liverpool, suffered an early exit from the Champions League and got frustratingly beaten by underdogs Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final. Only a late-season revival helped them to secure the third spot in the league table, keeping themselves in the Champions League. It was a greatly disappointing campaign by their standards. However, City has made some fascinating moves in the special transfer window, like acquiring left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves, Serie A’s midfielder of the season, Tjani Reijnders and talented playmaker Ryan Cherki, showing that they won’t tolerate another downfall like this. The other factor was to find the right players to replace the club icon Kevin De Bruyne, who cut his decade-long stay at the club. There will be no better place to show that revival using their eye-catching signings than the Club World Cup, winning the tournament will give them a $1 billion prize money, which is a ridiculous increase from the amount they won as the final champions of the old format in 2023, also giving them huge motivation for the new campaign. Placed in a group with Wydad Casablanca, against whom they open the competition, Al-Ain and fellow UEFA side Juventus, there is absolutely no reason Guardiola’s side won’t be gunning to not only win the group but be the first winners for the truly global club competition.

Meanwhile, Wydad Casablanca also failed to win their league, which they have clinched a record 22 times in their history, last season, marking it the third straight year of not being champions. Yet, they have been unbeaten in competitive games this year. The Club of the Nation is entering the Club World Cup 2025 with something to show for, securing their place in the competition after winning their third CAF Champions League title in the 2021-22 season. However, a lot has changed since and they would have wished for a slightly less competitive group rather than facing two European juggernauts. An easier start was also desirable, but they are taking on the 2023 Champions League winners and competition holders in the opening Group G game. Despite having more experience than City in the tournament, with this being their third appearance, the Moroccan giants have been eliminated in their first match in the second round of the old format each time. They have at least three games to play in the group stage of the new format, but only a miracle will allow them to qualify for the knockouts. The side also lost two pre-tournament friendlies against European teams, FC Porto and Sevilla, albeit with a 1-0 score, so they are also in dearth of momentum. Mohamed Amine Benhachem’s team also suffered a first-ever group-stage elimination in their CAF Champions League history last season, sparking major problems for them in cup tournaments. A third-place finish looks to be the most ideal for Wydad as they look to avoid any humiliation against one of the best sides in Europe to start with.

MCI vs WYD Team News

Manchester City are set to display their new signings from the start, with Nouri at left-back, Reijnders in midfield and Cherki taking the right winger role. Despite having injury issues, John Stones has been included in the competition’s squad, but Mateo Kovacic has been sidelined with a heel problem. Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker are left out, as is Kalvin Phillips, out until August with an Achilles tendon injury. On the other hand, Wydad have a fully fit squad available.
