Mumbai City vs Chennaiyin FC (MUM vs CHN) Match Preview
Mumbai City managed to grab the final playoff spot with a win in their final game of the league season, however, their joy was short-lived as Bengaluru pummeled them at this stage with a 5-0 scoreline, suffering embarrassment at the hands of the same opponent they beat to gain the sixth spot. This was an underwhelming return for a side in constant battle for the ISL Shield and the Cup over the last few seasons. Petr Kratky’s team will want to bounce back strongly, with the Super Cup being the last chance for them to clinch a trophy and return to the Asian stage. Finding motivation will be difficult for a side coming into the tournament with no momentum, suffering a heavy loss in their last game and the 2-0 win over the Blues last month the only one managed in the previous six games. Mumbai’s inconsistent form has cost them the ISL campaign, but they will not want to suffer elimination in the first round against an opponent they have stayed unbeaten against since 2020 and collected 15 wins in 25 meetings, including the previous two in this competition. However, the Islanders have been eliminated each time from the round of 16 stage whenever the Super Cup has been played in a single knockout format.
Contrary to the Islanders, Chennaiyin FC failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing 11th in the 13-team league with nine points away from the top six. It sounds far worse knowing Owen Coyle’s side failed to do so, even with a revamped squad, than the past season, when they made the playoffs. The side managed just three wins in 2025 among the seven registered in the entire ISL season, showing their struggles. However, the Marina Machans ended their league term with a 5-2 victory over eventual semifinalists Jamshedpur FC, hoping the result gives them a confidence boost as they eye the Super Cup now in Bhubaneshwar. Finalists in 2019, the task will be colossal for the Chennai-based club in this single knockout format, carrying a poor record against Mumbai City, facing them for the third straight edition in the Super Cup and likely to face the ISL finalist Bengaluru FC in the quarterfinals should they progress here. Chennaiyin FC secured a 2-0 victory in the first Super Cup meeting against the Islanders five years ago, the only time they went past the first round of the competition, which could serve as a motivation in this fixture.
