Despite starting strongly and leading the table at one point, Manolo Marquez’s FC Goa had to settle for the third spot in the ISL league phase and lost to eventual Cup winners Mumbai City in the playoffs semifinals. One of the factors was the injuries that plagued the side in the second half of the campaign but the one positive the Gaurs drew is that the 2022 ISL winning coach is the right man to lead them. The stance was reassured this summer when FC Goa won the Bandodkar Trophy ahead of fellow ISL team Odisha FC and even defeated A-League outfit Brisbane Roar for a perfect pre-season. The Spaniard will share his duties with India’s men’s national team after being elected to the role following the sacking of Igor Stimac but the club will not mind it if their objectives for the new season are met. With some valuable additions to the squad, FC Goa wants to hit the top ceiling in the ISL again in the second season under Roca.
Jamshedpur FC will be the visitors in their league opener at Fatorda hoping to make a mark like them this season having failed to qualify for the playoffs last season. The Men of Steel turned their miserable campaign around since Khalid Jamil took charge but it was not enough for them to move into the top-six after a poor end to the season. Failing to win any of their final five league games last season cost them dearly with the team willing to change the record completely in the new season. Despite losing key performers this summer, Jamshedpur FC has still made exciting signings like that of Javi Hernandez. The team needs a good start after failing to move into the knockouts of the Durand Cup 2024 as well, albeit with a second-string squad. Jamil’s side has won just once on their trip to Fatorda but that should not dampen their spirit of giving a considerable fight in their season opener to get a result in their favour.
