Glenn Phillips becomes 2nd New Zealand cricketer to score T20 World Cup century

During the match against Sri Lanka at Sydney in the Group 1 of the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, Glenn Phillips became the second New Zealand cricketer and 11th overall batter to score a century in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history.

The 25-year-old New Zealand cricketer Glenn Phillips came to bat at no.4 when his team was deeply struggling in the first innings of the game after winning the toss. However, Phillips played a strong character for his team to build up an excellent match-winning first innings total.

The right-handed batter Phillips completed his first 50 runs in 39 balls. Later he completed his second T20I century in 61 balls. Finally, he scored 104 off 64 balls (10 fours and 4 sixes) before he was caught out in the final over of that innings.  

Phillips’ 104 helped New Zealand to score 167/7 in 20 overs as the right-handed batter scored 62.27 per cent runs of his team. In reply, Sri Lanka scored 102 (all out) in 19.2 overs as the Blackcaps won by 65 runs.

• First batter from lower than the top three to score a century in Men’s T20 World Cup history. The previous best in T20 World Cup by a number 4 or lower batter was 94 by Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal (vs Australia at Mirpur in 2014).

• Second New Zealand batter (after Brendon McCullum in 2012) to score a T20 World Cup century.

• After England (Alex Hales in 2014 and Jos Buttler in 2021), New Zealand became the second team where two different batters have registered centuries in the history of the Men’s T20 World Cup.

• Third slowest T20 World Cup century (61 balls). The top two slowest T20 World Cup centuries are 67 balls by English cricketer Jos Buttler (vs Sri Lanka in 2021) and 63 balls by Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene (vs Zimbabwe in 2010).

• Fourth New Zealand batter to score more than one T20I century. While Colin Munro has recorded three T20I centuries, Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum also recorded two T20I centuries each.

• Fourth youngest to score a T20 World Cup century.
