Six Ethiopians battled in the Women’s 5000m event in the 2026 Diamond League Final, as the country settled for the top three places. Freweyni Hailu won her first Diamond League title by winning the Brussels event.
Hailu finished the race in 14:35.20, while her natives Likina Amebaw (14:36.31) and Senayet Getachew (14:37.09) claimed the next two places, respectively. Australian Rose Davies (14:37.47) and Georgia Griffith (14:38.69), who finished in fourth and sixth places, respectively, secured their respective season-best performances. Meanwhile, another Australian Linden Hall produced her personal best performance despite the 10th-place finish (14:40.62).
Jana van Lent from Belgium and Francine Niyomukunzi from Burundi failed to finish the long-distance race. Francine led the first 1000m and 2000m distances, while Dutch Maureen Koster led the 3000m and 4000m distances, but lately, Hailu claimed the title with consistent progress in the event.

Who is Freweyni Hailu?
Ethiopian Freweyni Hailu won her first Diamond League title. The women’s 2000m national record holder earlier won the World Athletics Indoor Championships twice (15000m in 2024 and 3000m in 2025).
In the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, Hailu closely missed a podium finish after managing fourth place in the women’s 1500m event.
