Chelsea FC Suspend Enzo Fernández

A decision that was somewhat expected to come, Chelsea have officially suspended their vice-captain Enzo Fernández for the club’s next two fixtures following a series of controversial public statements he made during the March international break. Manager Liam Rosenior confirmed on Friday that the Argentine midfielder will be omitted from the matchday squads for Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and next Sunday’s high-stakes clash with Manchester City in the Premier League.

This disciplinary action follows an interview where Fernández appeared to lure a move to Real Madrid after pulling out from Argentina national team squad due to an injury.

Why is Enzo Fernandez suspended?

Speaking to the Argentine channel SpiderCARP, Fernández expressed a strong desire to live in Madrid, comparing the Spanish capital to his home city of Buenos Aires. He also notably named Madrid legends Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić as his primary idols, fueling intense speculation that he is seeking an exit from Stamford Bridge. This did not got well with the club's fans and even in the dressing room where a reported fracture is growing. It also led to pressure from the media and the club had to come to a decision, or a punishment, that would ease up the situation a bit.

Speaking in the press conference ahead of facing League One side Port Vale in the FA Cup, Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior clearly stated that "a line was crossed". The former Strasbourg coach emphasized that the decision to suspend Fernandez was necessary to protect the club’s culture and ethos. "I spoke to Enzo an hour ago. As a football club, we've made a decision. He won't be available for tomorrow's game and he won't be available for Manchester City," Rosenior stated. While the manager maintained he has "the utmost respect" for Fernández as a person, he noted that the player’s conduct during the international break was "disappointing" and required a formal sanction.

Dressing Room Unrest and On-Field Tension

The suspension comes amid reports of growing tensions at Chelsea about their Argentinian midfielder. Teammates are reportedly said to be "unimpressed" by Fernández’s lack of commitment, especially given his role as vice-captain. Since his move from Benfica in 2023, he has divided opinions in the fanbase about his contributions for the club and whether he has produced the required efforts for a Premier League giant. The internal friction has further stemmed after he publicly cast doubt on his long-term future at Chelsea after the club's elimination at the hands of PSG in the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League last month. His on-pitch behavior has also drawn scrutiny. Reports from The Telegraph suggest players are frustrated with Fernández’s tendency to publicly berate teammates during matches, including a heated exchange with goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen in that PSG defeat. Former players like John Obi Mikel, have not liked the situation created by the player, suggesting that anyone whose "heart is already in Madrid" should not be representing Chelsea.

Is the Real Madrid door now open for Fernandez?

The two game suspension for Enzo Fernandez has ignited media speculations of the midfielder's future with the club and whether this was the last straw that broke the camel's back which will open the road for the World Cup winner to don the Los Blancos shirt as soon as next season. Chelsea are also struggling financially as they have reportedly endured historic losses and a big transfer sale in the summer would help the club stabilise them a bit. Despite being under contract until 2032, as part of the long term deal the club initially made part of their project, Chelsea may be forced to consider a move for Fernandez possibly to his outspoken destination, Real Madrid in a lucrative offer that might cost around $132.33 million.

A transfer might be on the cards if the club feels it is a necessary solution considering the relationship between the player and the club remains tenable. For now, there has been no such noises in the Stamford Bridge as Fernández remains at the club but sidelined due to the recent suspension. Rosenior also insisted the "door is not closed" for the player provided he recommits to the team's collective goals. Despite his criticism, Enzo is a key player and a starter for the side having contributed to 22 goals this season and his services will be required eventually as the club chases a top four berth to continue in the Champions League. However, it is a situation that everyone will keep tabs on as Chelsea look to improve their form in the next few games without him.
