Inter Milan had a historic Serie A campaign last time out when Cristian Chivu, after winning multiple titles as a player for the club, won the title as a coach in his maiden season. It was the Nerazzurri’s 21st league title victory with three matches to spare and an utterly dominating one where they racked up 87 points, 11 more than second-placed Napoli, who snatched the title on the final day last year, with a league-high 89 goals scored and only 35 conceded.
The season proved to be the healer after losing the Scudetto in that manner and also suffering an embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final not long after in the final campaign under Simone Inzaghi. Despite suffering another nightmarish exit from the knockout playoffs in the Champions League, even before the main knockout stage, against surprise package Bodo Glimt, fans were pleased about Chivu’s team showing domestically.
The Serie A champions will definitely want to improve in Europe, but their priority will remain defending their league honour. The competition is only going to get tougher as the closest challenger, Napoli, is going through a transformation, while rivals AC Milan, Juventus, Roma or even Como are coming with renewed ambitions. Inter have also strengthened themselves, looking at English players specifically in the market.
The arrival of experienced and several Premier League winner John Stones from Man City, World Cup star for England Djed Spence and Curtis Jones from Liverpool. However, they lost star right-back Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid. Chivu knows they might not be runaway league winners like last time but certainly have in their arsenal to win back-to-back Scudetti for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

Cagliari vs Inter
Inter’s 2026-27 Serie A campaign will kick off in the second-to-last week of August, facing Monza at San Siro. The side from Northern Italy got promoted through the Serie B playoffs last season. Inter won this fixture in the last two meetings at the venue when Monza was in the top flight last time, but they had to leave it late in the 2025 clash in a thrilling 3-2 win, while they also had to suffer a shock loss in April 2023. So, it won’t be as straightforward as it looks.
The same could be said about their first away game of the season to Cagliari, although they have won their last six visits there. However, the Nerazzurri will have no one but themselves to blame if they don’t make a solid start with full points in both games in the opening month.

AS Roma vs Inter
The real challenge starts in September 2026, when they engage in an early title decider with Napoli at home on the 5th of the month. The Partenopei have a new face in former Juventus and Milan boss Maximiliano Allegri in charge of the club after Antonio Conte left the managerial role this summer, and they will be desperate to seek revenge for getting beaten to the league title last season by Inter. Although Cristian Chivu’s men have not lost this clash at San Siro since February 2020, they have drawn the last three meetings here and are without a victory overall in this tie since January 2024.
A severe challenge is also expected in the capital from AS Roma after playing Udinese in back-to-back home games to start the month. The Giallorossi have been rejuvenated under former Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini, having secured a return to the Champions League after so many years dramatically last season, giving Inter a lot to think about before heading into the first international break of the season. In addition, the Champions League campaign will start bringing more pressure to the schedule.

Venezia vs Inter
Post the international break, Inter have a much more likeable schedule on paper. Even if they have a difficult start to the campaign, October will be the period to gain necessary points to strengthen their position early. They will resume action after the international break against Parma, who finished 14th last season and are also set to miss their star goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, before taking on Bologna, who just missed out on European football.
Those games will be followed by a clash with Fiorentina, who struggled massively last time and promoted side Venezia. The Nerazzurri have an excellent record against all these sides, except for facing Bologna away, where they have been inconsistent over the last few years. There is every right for the side to feel confident in this period of the season. For the first time, they will play four games with the addition of the matches in Europe, so the main issue will be to manage workload.

Inter vs Genoa
Following that, Chivu’s men will be hauled into an intense schedule in November that will cause a headache. The first Milan derby of the season falls at the start of the month, with the Nerazzurri taking on AC Milan now under ex-Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim. Despite having more success in recent years, Inter’s record against their arch-rivals has been surprisingly poor.
They have not won this clash since the huge 5-1 triumph back in September 2023, while they lost twice to them in the league last season, apart from a humiliating 3-0 defeat in the Coppa Italia semifinal stage, for the first time since 2011-12. Hence, this will be a huge fixture for the defending champions. Inter then face last season’s surprise packages, the exciting Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, who made their way to the Champions League for the first time in their history; and Atalanta, who are a force despite losing their star manager Gasperini and missing out on European football places last season.

Lecce vs Inter
After a nerve-wracking month, Inter will have an easier end to 2026 with no top-six opponent lined up. They will face teams that finished in the bottom half of the Serie A table the previous season. The first fixture in the final month of the year, though, comes against a promoted side, Frosinone, which earned promotion back to the top division after two seasons. Inter have won all six meetings in this fixture, and there should be no doubt if they prevail once again.
The only home game this month comes against Torino, the guests whom they have beaten each time since 2020 at San Siro and conceded just twice in the last six meetings. They haven’t lost this fixture at the venue since 2016. The final match to close out the year is a trip to Lecce, who just finished above the relegation zone last time and haven't won this battle since 2012 or scored in the last five meetings. There would be no excuse if Inter failed to finish 2026 on a high.

Napoli vs Inter
The New Year will give an instant challenge to the defending champions, as they will face three top bidders in the opening month. The Nerazzurri will open 2027 by welcoming Sassuolo, whom they have lost only once in their last nine games against them overall, ahead of the first clashes against Lazio and Juventus of the season. Inter obliterated the side from Rome 6-0 last time at Stadio Olimpico, a venue which was a difficult place to visit in this fixture not too long ago while carrying an unbeaten record since 2022.
The Derby d'Italia, though, will be tricky for Chivu’s side, as recent games against the Bianconeri have produced jaw-dropping thrillers. Still, Inter are unbeaten in this derby at home in the last four meetings, including three victories. Parma and Venezia in reverse clashes will follow the difficult start to January before they wrap up the month with another high-octane battle against Napoli in Naples for the second supposed title-deciding clash of the season.

There will be no chance of respite, as Serie A will enter its business period totally in February 2027, with the Champions League knockouts also to be handled simultaneously. The second Milan derby will roll out its red carpet this month, with Inter slated as the home side this time in the San Siro while also ending the month against Atalanta. The Nerazzurri will have to avoid slipping up, as this will prove to be a crucial period in their title defence.

The penultimate month of the season would be tricky, as a few fixtures could turn out to be banana skins. Roma is obviously the biggest challenger and has troubled the Nerazzurri in their visit to San Siro. Having said that, the capital team lost 5-2 at this venue in April. Genoa, Monza and Bologna should be winnable ties but not without being mindful that they can cause a significant upset at this time when everyone is fighting for something.

Sassuolo vs Inter
The end of the season will prove to be the most difficult one for the Nerazzurri, with their hold on the title severely tested in May if they haven’t confirmed it yet. A tricky visit to Como to start the month will set the tone, with a visit to Turin, where they haven’t won since April 2022, and Lazio all having the potential to derail their chances this late in the campaign. The final game of the 2026-27 season on 30 May 2027 is against Sassuolo, but it will be an away game. Like last time, Inter will be opting to wrap up the title early rather than pinning all hopes on this game.
