Liverpool made an awful defence of the Premier League title last season as they finished a massive 25 points behind champions Arsenal in fifth place, with Champions League football only secured because England received an additional slot due to its clubs’ deep run in European competition. They accumulated just 57 points compared to 84 managed last year in their title-winning campaign under the same manager, Arne Slot, showing their shocking downfall. It was also a campaign which became the final one for club legend Mohamed Salah in a Red shirt after the Egyptian fell out with the manager and joined Turkish side Trabzonspor. The club decided to part ways with Slot despite reportedly backing him throughout the season, as it became too much at the end. However, Liverpool fans were greeted with the news that promising manager Andoni Iraola is tasked with bringing a refreshed era to the club starting from the 2026-27 season, with the Spaniard showing the potential of becoming a future great in his role after his eye-catching work with fellow Premier League side AFC Bournemouth.
Iraola’s first competitive game with the Reds will begin on 23 August 2026 in a daunting trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United, also under new management. Then they will face Nottingham Forest in the first home game of the season at Anfield, a fixture they have strikingly lost in the past two seasons under Slot, including an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the place in November last year. After a tricky start, Liverpool have a relatively easier run of games, although they have to face Bournemouth in their manager’s reunion with his former employees at the end of September. Manchester City at the Etihad, now managed by Enzo Maresca, will throw the biggest stage so far after the first international break in October, in which they will also face defending champions Arsenal. It doesn’t get easier for the two-time Premier League winners as they have to wrestle Manchester United in the North-West derby and Everton in the Merseyside derby back-to-back in November. Meanwhile, London duo Chelsea and Tottenham will be their opponents in the final month of the year. Incidentally, Liverpool’s campaign ends against Bournemouth in May 2027 in the final month of the season, where they also face Chelsea and City in consecutive games in an unforgiving schedule.
