Arsenal's young superstar Max Dowman has made history once again after featuring in their 0-1 victory over Sporting in the Champions League Quarter-final first leg. The Gunners were in terrible form prior to the game, having crashed out of the FA Cup against Southampton and losing to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. Thus, the pressure was huge on Mikel Arteta and his men to deliver.
Many had hoped Dowman would start the game against Sporting due to Bukayo Saka's injury, as the 16 year old English winger was one of their best players in the shock loss against Southampton in the FA Cup. In fact, Mikel Arteta had stated prior to the Sporting game that Dowman was very close to starting the game. The following were his exact words:
“He was very close because he’s doing so many good things.
“But we need to remember as well that he just played 90 minutes three days ago, and we have to make sure that we have to use him when he is ready.”
Nonetheless, Dowman still appeared in the game later as a substitute, and in the process, he has now made history yet again in the UEFA Champions League.
Arsenal's Max Dowman breaks Champions League record of Barcelona star Lamine Yamal
Lamine Yamal made headlines when he burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old at Barcelona, quickly establishing himself as one of the brightest young talents in world football. His rapid rise saw him set a historic milestone in February 2024, when he became the youngest player ever to feature in a Champions League knockout match during Barcelona’s clash with Napoli, aged 16 years and 223 days. However, that record has now been surpassed.
On Tuesday night, Arsenal youngster Max Dowman etched his name into the history books by making his Champions League knockout-stage debut at just 16 years and 97 days old. The teenager was introduced by Mikel Arteta for the final 14 minutes of the game against Sporting Lisbon.
With that appearance, Dowman officially became the youngest player ever to feature in the knockout rounds of the competition, overtaking Yamal’s previous record. It marks a remarkable moment in the young Arsenal talent’s career and highlights the club’s growing trust in its emerging stars on the biggest stage.
The teenager had already made history in the Champions League earlier this season, during Arsenal’s emphatic 3–0 victory over Slavia Prague in November. On that night in the Czech Republic, Dowman came off the bench to become the youngest player ever to feature in the competition, marking another remarkable milestone in his rapid rise. As things stand, it sure does look like Dowman could end up as one of the biggest stars in football after a few years.
What next for Dowman and Arsenal?
Mikel Arteta's side will be taking on Bournemouth this weekend in the Premier League, and we'll have to see if Dowman ends up playing in the game or not.
